Bioelectrochemical system (BES) for recalcitrant p-nitrophenol (PNP) removal was investigated in this study. Effective removal of PNP at rates up to 9.14 ± 0.48 mol m(-3)d(-1) was achieved at an energy consumption as low as 0.010 ± 0.002 kWh mol(-1) PNP. PNP removal rate was enhanced with negative cathode potential, increased influent PNP concentration and shortened hydraulic retention time (HR...

A sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was inoculated with p-nitrophenol-degrading activated sludge to biodegrade a mixture of monosubstituted phenols: p-nitrophenol (PNP), PNP and o-cresol; and PNP, o-cresol and o-chlorophenol. Settling times were progressively decreased to promote biomass granulation. PNP was completely biodegraded. The PNP and o-cresol mixture was also biodegraded although some tr...

Pseudomonas putida DLL-E4 can efficiently degrade para-nitrophenol and its intermediate metabolite hydroquinone. The regulation of para-nitrophenol degradation was studied, and PNP induced a global change in the transcriptome of P. putida DLL-E4. When grown on PNP, the wild-type strain exhibited significant downregulation of 2912 genes and upregulation of 845 genes, whereas 2927 genes were down...

The effect of nitro-substituent on mononitrophenol (o-nitrophenol (ONP), m-nitrophenol (MNP) and p-nitrophenol (PNP)) reduction in a bioelectrochemical system (BES) was investigated in this study. The results show that the removal of all three nitrophenols was significantly enhanced with more negative cathode potential and shortened hydraulic retention time in the BESs. Moreover, the reduction ...

Biodegradation kinetics of 4-nitrophenol (PNP) in aqueous solution by a gram negative soil bacterium, Ralstoniaeutropha was firstly studied in a small scale batch reactor. The degradation of PNP was evaluated at initial PNP concentrations ranging from 3 mg/L to 14 mg/L. The rate of PNP consumption by the bacterium culture was modeled using Monod and Contois kinetics in batch condition. PNP degr...

P-Nitrophenol is a major metabolite of some organophosphorus compounds. It is considered to be one of nitrophenol derivatives of diesel exhaust particles that induce substantial hazards impacts on human and animal health. P-Nitrophenol (PNP) is a persistent organic pollutant. Consequently, bioaccumulation of PNP potentiates toxicity. The objectives of the current study were to assess the potent...

Biodegradation of para-Nitrophenol (PNP) proceeds via two distinct pathways, having 1,2,3-benzenetriol (BT) and hydroquinone (HQ) as their respective terminal aromatic intermediates. Genes involved in these pathways have already been studied in different PNP degrading bacteria. Burkholderia sp. strain SJ98 degrades PNP via both the pathways. Earlier, we have sequenced and analyzed a ~41 kb frag...

The first complete genome sequence of a p-nitrophenol (PNP)-degrading bacterium is reported here. Pseudomonas putida DLL-E4, a Gram-negative bacterium isolated from methyl-parathion-polluted soil, can utilize PNP as the sole carbon and nitrogen source. P. putida DLL-E4 has a 6,484,062 bp circular chromosome that contains 5,894 genes, with a G+C content of 62.46%.

P-Nitrophenol (PNP) is considered to be one of nitrophenol derivatives of diesel exhaust particles. PNP is a major metabolite of some organophosphorus compounds. PNP is a persistent organic pollutant as well as one of endocrine-disrupting compounds. Consequently, bioaccumulation of PNP potentiates toxicity. The objectives of the current study were to assess in vivo adverse effects of long-term ...
