This paper presents the application of the fuzzy-neuro method toinvestigate transformer inrush current. Recently, the frequency environment ofpower systems has been made more complicated and the magnitude of the secondharmonic in inrush current has been decreased because of the improvement of caststeel. Therefore, traditional approaches will likely mal-operate in the case ofmagnetizing inrush w...

The inrush current is a transient current that results from a sudden change in the exciting voltage across a transformer’s windings. It may cause inadvertent operation of the protective relay system and necessitate strengthening of the transformer’s mechanical structure. Many methods were reported in the literatures for reduction and mitigation of transformer inrush currents. This paper represe...

This paper presents some techniques for reduction of transformer inrush current. The equation of inrush current is obtained and then by using these methods, transformer inrush current is reduced, then after comparing the result of each method, the best choice is determined. Results which have been obtained from EMTP simulation confirm these subjects.

Energizing of large power transformers is considered a critical event in the operation of an electric power system. When a transformer is energized by the grid or utility, it takes very high value current known as inrush current, the typical value of this current could be ten times. This inrush causes many problems like mechanical stress on transformer & harmonics injection to generator winding...

This research studies the forces on the windings of transformer due to inrush current. These forces are compared with the corresponding forces due to short-circuit of the windings. Twodimensional finite element computation of a single-phase shell-type transformer is carried out based on the maximum permissible inrush current value where its amplitude is the same as the rated shortcircuit curren...

(Received: October 30, 2011; Accepted: December 8, 2011) Abstract: This paper presents a novel technique for transformer differential protection to prevent incorrect operation due to inrush current. The proposed method in this paper is based on time-frequency transform known as the Wavelet transform. The discrete Wavelet transform is used for analysis the differential current signals in time an...

The energizing of large power transformers has long been considered a critical event in the operation of an electric power system. When a transformer is energized by the utility, a typical inrush current could be as high as ten times its rated current. This could cause many problems from mechanical stress on transformer windings to harmonics injection, and system protection malfunction. There h...

The behavior of three phase five leg transformer under voltage sag is studied in this paper. This paper proposes a simple, practical model of a three phase-five leg, saturated transformer with accurate performance. Transformer saturation is produced when the voltage sag is recovered and it causes inrush current in transformer. Effects of voltage sag depth, duration and initial point on wave hav...

The phenomenon of magnetizing inrush is a transient condition, which occurs primarily when a transformer is energized. The magnitude of inrush current may be as high as ten times or more times of transformer rated current that causes malfunction of protection system. So, for safe running of a transformer, it is necessary to distinguish inrush current from fault currents. In this paper, an equiv...
