Forced coalescence of liquid marbles is reported. Liquid marbles were connected by a glass rod hydrophilized with cold radiofrequency plasma. The process resulted in formation of Janus-marbles. “Sandwich” marbles enclosing solid foamed polystyrene particles and built from immiscible liquids are reported. A broad variety of organic and non-organic powders gives rise to Janus and “sandwich” marbles.
Liquid marbles are water droplets covered with solid particles. Here we show a method for the preparation of edible liquid marbles and capsules covered with fatty acid crystals and triacylglycerol crystals. We prepared liquid marbles using a simple method; namely, a water droplet was rolled on lipid crystals in petri dishes. The resulting marbles were converted to capsules covered with a lipid ...
INTRODUCTION 2 The " Bag of marbles " example " Bag of marbles " problems (Walley, 1996) • " I have. .. a closed bag of coloured marbles. I intend to shake the bag, to reach into it and to draw out one marble. What is the probability that I will draw a red marble? " • " Suppose that we draw a sequence of marbles whose colours are (in order): blue, green, blue, blue, green, red.
Magnetic liquid marbles have recently attracted extensive attention for various potential applications. However, conventional liquid marbles based on iron oxide nanoparticles are opaque and inadequate for photo-related applications. Herein, we report the first development of liquid marbles coated with magnetic lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) that can convert near-infrared li...

Liquid marbles are microlitre droplets of liquid, encapsulated by self-organised hydrophobic particles at the liquid/air interface. They offer an efficient approach for manipulating liquid droplets and compartmentalising reactions in droplets. Digital fluidic devices employing liquid marbles might benefit from having embedded computing circuits without electronics and moving mechanical parts (a...
Liquid marbles can be used as micro-bioreactors, thanks to their unique properties. On the one hand, the highly porous, non-adhesive, and hydrophobic shell of liquid marbles efficiently inhibits any direct contact between the liquid core of the marble and the surface that supports it, while allowing oxygen and carbon dioxide to pass through. On the other hand, the finite volume of liquid in liq...
In this work, we investigated the coalescence of liquid water marbles driven by a DC electric field. We have found that two contacting liquid marbles can be forced to coalesce when they are charged by a sufficiently high voltage. The threshold voltage leading to the electro-coalescence sensitively depends on the stabilizing particles as well as the surface tension of the aqueous phase. By evalu...
In this study, we report the assembly of amphiphilic polymeric micelles at the liquid/air interface to prepare liquid marbles for the first time. The polymeric micelles were synthesized from the self-assembly of a fluoropolymer, poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid-co-2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate), in a selective solvent. The particle size, morphology and chemical composition of the micelle...
