Anomalous diffusion is characterized by its asymptotic behavior for t → ∞. This makes it difficult to detect and describe in particle trajectories from experiments or computer simulations, which are necessarily of finite length. We propose a new approach using Bayesian inference applied directly to the observed trajectories sampled at different time scales. We illustrate the performance of this...

The function and mode of action of curcumin in modulating the formation of lipid raft domains were investigated by microscopic observation using model membranes. Curcumin induces fusion of lipid raft domains at extremely low concentrations through the alteration of the boundary between the ordered and disordered phases.

Lipid domains in supported lipid layers serve as a popular model to gain insight into the processes associated with the compartmentalization of biological membranes into so-called lipid rafts. In this paper, we present reproducible tip-enhanced Raman spectra originating from a very small number of molecules in a lipid monolayer on a gold surface, probed by the apex of a nanometer-sized silver t...

We derive a new density-biased Monte Carlo technique which preserves detailed balance and improves the convergence of grand-canonical simulations of a species with a strong preference for an interfacial region as compared to the bulk. This density-biasing technique is applied to the solubility of "alcohol" molecules in a mesoscopic model of the lipid bilayer, a system which has anesthetic impli...

Mating of Ascomycete fungi involves chemically distinct pheromones; one partner makes a lipid-modified peptide, the other partner a simple peptide. A new study has now found that this inherent asymmetry may not be necessary.

OBJECTIVE This study was performed to quantify adherence rates to lipid-lowering drug therapy among members of the Canadian Forces (CF) and to identify factors associated with nonadherence. METHODS Pharmacy claims were reviewed for all CF members who received a lipid-lowering drug between April 1 and June 1, 2003. Subjects were categorized as adherent if records indicated consumption of at le...
