respiratory failure is a serious complication of h1n1 influenza that, if not properly managed, can cause death. when mechanical ventilation is not effective, the only way to save the patient’s life is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ecmo). a prolonged type of cardiopulmonary bypass, ecmo is a high-cost management modality compared to other conventional types and its maintenance requires sk...

We report the use of venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation with a single dual lumen cannula in a 42-year-old patient suffering from a post-pneumonectomy fistula and severe respiratory insufficiency, avoiding the classical approach of invasive mechanical ventilation. We discussed the potential advantages of extracorporeal oxygenation as the main support in this particular clinical setting.

Tracheal injury is a rare but highly morbid complication of endotracheal intubation. Recent reviews have advocated conservative management of these injuries without operative intervention. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation may be a useful tool in non-operative management of tracheal injury in the setting of severe respiratory failure and need for prolonged intubation. We present a morbidly ob...

Refractory hypoxemia is a common finding in these patients and can be challenging to manage. This review focuses on nonventilatory strategies in the advanced treatment of severe respiratory failure and refractory hypoxemia such as ...

The H1N1-flu affected primary young and female patients without major comorbidities (1-3). Although most of the confirmed cases have been self-limited and uncomplicated febrile respiratory illness, there have been severe infection with complications or mortality as well. In some cases, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was commenced for the treatment of refractory hypoxemia, hypercapni...
