aim : the aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the current reported efficacy and the mortality rate of sems treatment in uncontrolled bleeding patients.   background : esophageal variceal bleeding (evb) represents a life threatening pathology. despite the adequate pharmacologic and endoscopic treatment, continuous or recurrent bleeding, named as uncontrolled bleeding, occurs in 10-20% ...

Background: There have been reports on stent-related vascular erosions about patients with benign or malignant stenosis of the esophagus who received endoscopic stent insertion for palliative intention for oral intake. Case presentation: A 61-year-old woman with esophageal cancer located in the middle part of esophagus was treated with esophagectomy. Two years following the surgery, malignan...

Placement of a self-expanding metal stent (SEMS) is an effective method for palliation of a malignant biliary obstruction. However, metal stents can cause various complications, including stent migration. Distally migrated metal stents, particularly covered SEMS, can be removed successfully in most cases. Stent trimming using argon plasma coagulation may be helpful in difficult cases despite co...

Constitutive law for shape-memory alloys subjected to multi-axial loading, which is based on a semi-micromechanical integrated multi-plane model capable of internal mechanism observations, is generally not available in the literature. The presented numerical results show significant variations in the mechanical response along the multi loading axes. These are attributed to changes in the marten...

Endoscopic palliation of concomitant biliary and duodenal malignant obstruction can be challenging because of difficult access to the papilla, which may consequently result in possible failure of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD), either before or after duodenal stent placement, has emerged as an alternative approa...

Current guidelines recommend management of benign gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) with serial dilations. Self-expanding metal stents are effective, but their use is complicated by high rates of migration. We present two cases from our institution where a uniquely designed, lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) was successfully used to alleviate benign GOO without stent migration.

Over half of patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer are unsuitable for curative resection. A significant proportion of these patients will subsequently require palliative stenting to alleviate dysphagia. There is growing consensus in the literature that the deployment of a Self-Expanding Metal Stent is the optimum stenting strategy; however, it remains unclear whether covered or uncovered me...

OBJECTIVES Bronchial stenosis is still a significant source of morbidity and mortality following lung transplantation (LTX) and often mandating placement of a bronchial stent. It has been suggested that although self-expanding metal stents offer excellent early palliation, their long-term complication rates are unacceptably high, and hence, their usage in many transplantation centres has been n...

Background. Self-expanding metal stents can alleviate malignant colonic obstruction in incurable patients and avoid palliative stoma surgery. Objective. Evaluate stent effectiveness and safety on palliation of patients with malignant colorectal strictures. Design. Two prospective, one Spanish and one global, multicenter studies. Settings. 39 centers (22 academic, 17 community hospitals) from 13...

Self-expanding stents are relatively new in the field of urology and have primarily been used for permanent remodeling of benign or malignant stricture. We are presenting a rare and interesting case of a ureterocolic fistula that formed secondary to placement of an expandable, retrievable metal stent in the ureter. After multiple retrieval efforts, the self-expanding metal stent was finally ret...
