α-Isocyanoacetamides, acyl chlorides and dialkylacetylenedicarboxylates undergo a smooth multicomponent reaction to produce dialkyl 2-acyl-5-aminofuran-3,4-dicarboxylates in good yield. The scope and mechanism of this new multicomponent transformation are discussed.

Domestic microwave ovens as well as laboratory reactors have been successfully employed to prepare dialkyl 1,4-dihydropyridine-3,5-dicarboxylates and to induce the synthesis of the corresponding aromatic derivatives. In that latter particular case, unexpected results have been reported.

Dialkyl 1,4-dihydro-2,6-dimethylpyridine-3,5-dicarboxylates have been prepared in a batch mode under conventional heating as well as under continuous flow conditions in the Miniflow 200SS, Sairem's microwave-assisted batch and continuous flow equipment. Real-time monitoring of the reactions by Raman spectroscopy enabled to compare both heating modes and to determine (optimized) reaction times.

An efficient synthesis of isoquinoline-2,3-dicarboxylates is described via one-pot reactions of isoquinoline and alkyl bromids with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates in water at 70oC. The mild reaction conditions and high yields of the products exhibit the good synthetic advantage of these methods.

A 2-rhodaoxetane was found to react with unsaturated electrophiles, such as highly electron-deficient acetylene dicarboxylates, CS2 and various aldehydes, to form a series of six-membered metallacycles. These metallacycles were characterized by (1)H, (13)C and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques, as well as HRMS and, for one complex, XRD. In some cases, the insertions were found to be reversible.
