The effect of high CO(2) (1% CO(2)/21% O(2)) on the activity of specific forms of catalase (CAT-1, -2, and -3) (EA Havir, NA McHale [1987] Plant Physiol 84: 450-455) in seedling leaves of tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris, Nicotlana tabacum) was examined. In high CO(2), total catalase activity decreased by 50% in the first 2 days, followed by a more gradual decline in the next 4 days. The loss of t...

BACKGROUND Alleviation of oxidative stress via targeted delivery of catalase to the pulmonary endothelium by conjugation of angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) monoclonal antibodies attenuates lung injury in an in vivo model of warm lung ischaemia and reperfusion. This study evaluates treatment of lung allografts with conjugates of anti-ACE antibody with catalase (9B9-CAT) in the setting of hyp...

Seedlings of tobacco (Nicotiana sylvestris) were treated in vivo with 0.03 to 20 millimolar 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (aminotriazole). There was a rapid loss of catalase (EC 1.11.1.6) activity over the first 5 hours followed by a slower decrease for the next 4 hours to a level that was 15 to 20% of the initial activity, with little or no change for periods up to 3 days. Fifty percent loss of catal...

Growth of originally aerobic bakers' yeast under conditions of anaerobiosis caused a decrease in the total specific catalatic activity (patent plus cryptic) of one-half per generation. It is concluded that reversion of catalase was a dilution, rather than a destruction, of the intracellular enzyme. However, the specific patent (whole cell) catalase activity remained constant for one or more gen...

Catalase (CAT) is a well-studied enzyme that plays an important role in protecting cells against the toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. In human, it has been implicated in different physiological and pathological conditions. This review summarizes the information available on the function and role of CAT polymorphisms in pathogenesis of various pathophysiological states as well as on the regul...

Catalase incorporation into enumeration media caused a significant increase (greater than 63%) in the colony-forming abilities of airborne bacteria. Incubation for 30 to 60 min of airborne bacteria in collection fluid containing catalase caused a greater than 95% increase in colony-forming ability. However, catalase did not have any effects on enumeration at high relative humidities (80 to 90%).

background: cells have complex network of antioxidant enzymes that protect cells from induced damages by reactive oxygen species (ros). catalase and superoxide dismutase are known for their role as primary protection against oxidative stress. oxidative damage is an important risk factor in age-related macular degeneration disease (amd). for the first time in this study the impact of genetic pol...

Oxidative stress, resulting from excessive levels of ROS in semen, has a negative impact on functional parameters and sperm fertility. In this study we examined the influence of the oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in ovine sperm motility after thawing and catalase (CAT) ability to preserve sperm motility. Semen was incubated at 37°C with 100 μM H2O2, 1 U catalase + 100 μM H...

BACKGROUND Although many studies suggested direct vasomotor effects of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in vitro, little is known about the vasomotor effects of H2O2 in vivo. METHODS AND RESULTS We have generated mice overexpressing human catalase driven by the Tie-2 promoter to specifically target this transgene to the vascular tissue. Vessels of these mice (cat++) expressed significantly higher lev...

OBJECTIVE To determine if adenoviral-mediated transfer of the gene for catalase (CAT), the reactive oxygen species scavenger, suppresses experimental optic neuritis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Gene therapy with CAT delivered by an adeno-associated viral vector was previously shown to suppress experimental optic neuritis. Because the transduction of protein expression with recombinant adeno-associated...
