The contamination of sulfur emanating from pyrrhotite in magnetite concentrates has been a problem in iron ore processing. This study utilized froth flotation to float pyrrhotite away from magnetite using collectors of xanthate and dixanthogen. It was found that xanthate or dixanthogen alone could not achieve selective separation between pyrrhotite and magnetite in flotation. A high loss of mag...
An atomic force microscope (AFM) was applied to study of the adsorption xanthate on bornite surfaces in situ aqueous solutions. AFM images showed that xanthate, i.e., potassium ethyl (KEX) and amyl (PAX), adsorbed strongly bornite, adsorbate bound with mineral surface without being removed by flushing ethanol alcohol. The also increased collector concentration contact time. Xanthate a similar m...
• Lead sulphite passivated galena surfaces. Sulphite ions interacted with free lead to form sulphite. Dithionite decomposition products degraded xanthate in solution. are potential determining at the mineral surface. The recovery of sulphide minerals is depressed high dithionite concentrations. Sulphoxy anions recycled flotation process waters possess reduce efficacy reagents. In this study, an...
Exploring mechanism of xanthate adsorption on chalcopyrite surface: An atomic force microscopy study
In this work, adsorption of the potassium amyl xanthate collector on the pure chalcopyrite surface was studied by applying atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorption experiments were carried out at different concentrations of the collector and at diverse pH values in the presence or absence of exterior ions. The changes occurring in the surface morphology of chalcopyrite due to the collector...
Tetrathionates have been found in significantly high concentrations recycled process waters from massive sulphide ore processing plants. These polythionates react with xanthate added to flotation pulps thus reducing dosages solution potentially affecting performance. The current study focused on the effect of tetrathionate-xanthate reaction mineral recoveries. Ore dissolution studies confirmed ...
Xanthate is the most widely used and effective collector in flotation of sulfide minerals. However, residual xanthate wastewater may cause serious environmental pollution even human health hazards. At present, a variety treatment technologies have been developed to degrade pollutants wastewater, with aim meeting safe discharge standards. This work reviews research status recent years. Treatment...
The synthesis and characterization of gold(I) complexes of butyl xanthate [Au(2)((n)()Bu-xanthate)(2)], 1, and ethyl xanthate [Au(2)(Et-xanthate)(2)], 2, are described. These complexes are readily prepared from the reaction between Au(THT)Cl (THT = tetrahydrothiophene) and the corresponding xanthate ligands as the potassium salts. The two xanthate complexes are characterized by (1)H NMR, IR, ma...
An atomic force microscope (AFM) has been used to conduct force measurements to better understand the role of hydrophobic forces in flotation. The force measurements were conducted between a flat mineral substrate and a hydrophobic glass sphere in aqueous solutions. It is assumed that the hydrophobic glass sphere may simulate the behavior of air bubbles during flotation. The results may provide...
In this research, the selective flotation of galena and sphalerite minerals was evaluated from a pyrite-rich lead-zinc sample. An optimum mixture of selective collectors against pyrite and also organic/inorganic pyrite depressants was obtained in the flotation of galena and sphalerite by an experimental mixture design. The effect of different collectors and pH values were investigated in the ob...
Polarographic studies of potassium isobutyl xanthate at a mercury electrode reveal that the product of an anodic reaction is strongly adsorbed at the mercury surface, as indicated by a prewave. The adsorbed film greatly affects the characteristics of the anodic wave of xanthate in an aqeous medium. The current of total wave is proportional to the concentration of xanthate from 0.32 to 1.6 mM.
