In this paper by using numerical evaluation the effect of balancing drupes of water hammer on tunnels lining is considered. In case of not arrangment of these reservoirs, the tunnel lining will be damaged of cyclic powers of water hammer. In this research, function of balancing reservoir of water hammer on cover of tunnels to the barriers’ turbine is simulated by numerical methods and Plaxis 3D...

The present paper by Hummer et al. (1), building on previous developments in scaled-particle theory (2) and information theory (3-6) and using molecular simulations to test theoretical ideas, shows how one can predict the free energies of the hydrophobic hydration and the hydrophobic interaction of solutes composed of hard spheres from an analysis of spontaneous cavity formation in neat liquid ...

We present a lattice model of water confined in a hydrophobic nanotube. Using analytical methods and computer simulation, we find conditions where filled and empty tubes can be degenerate in equilibrium. We further find that flow of water molecules through a filled tube with appropriate but simple stochastic rules can be interpreted as water conduction in a pulse-like fashion. These two results...

The nonequilibrium work relation allows for the calculation of equilibrium free energy differences between states based on the exponential average of accumulated work from irreversible transitions. Here, we compare two distinct approaches of calculating free energy surfaces from unidirectional single-molecule pulling experiments: the stiff spring approximation and the Hummer-Szabo method. First...

Autonomous and semi-autonomous full-sized ground vehicles are becoming increasingly important, particularly in military applications. Here we describe the instrumentation of one such vehicle, a 4-wheel drive Hummer, for autonomous robotic operation. Actuators for steering, brake, and throttle have been implemented on a commercially available Hummer. Control is provided by on-board and remote co...

PURPOSE A recently-developed assistive technology nicknamed "the Hummer" was investigated as a potential powered wheelchair controller for individuals with severe and multiple disabilities. System performance in a noisy environment was compared to that obtained with a commercial automatic speech recognition (ASR) system. METHOD A bi-hum driving protocol was developed to allow the Hummer to se...

101 THIS TWO-PART FEATURE BEGAN with a discussion of why unconventional left-turn alternatives hold promise for the relief of congested urban and suburban arterials. Part One, which was printed in the September 1998 issue of ITE Journal on pages 26–29, also described three unconventional alternatives—the median U-turn, the bowtie and the superstreet. This part discusses four more alternatives.

We report the diffusion coefficient and viscosity of popular rigid water models: two non-polarizable ones (SPC/E with three sites, and TIP4P/2005 with four sites) and a polarizable one (Dang-Chang, four sites). We exploit the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the system size (Yeh and Hummer 2004 J. Phys. Chem. B 108 15873) to obtain the size-independent value. This also provides an es...
