Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus VRSA-10 was isolated in 2009, whereas VRSA-11A and VRSA-11B were isolated from the same patient in 2010. Growth curves and determination of the nature of the peptidoglycan precursors and of the VanX d,d-dipeptidase activity in the absence and in the presence of vancomycin indicated that vancomycin resistance was inducible in VRSA-10, that VRSA-11A was ...

Two methicillin- and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains, MI-VRSA and PA-VRSA, and Enterococcus faecalis DMC83006B, considered to be the potential donor of glycopeptide resistance to MI-VRSA, were studied. MI-VRSA is highly resistant to both glycopeptides, whereas PA-VRSA displays low-level resistance to vancomycin and reduced susceptibility to teicoplanin. We have analyzed the e...

In their recent paper, Kobayashi et al. evaluated the emergence of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) by genomic analysis (1). Based on whole-genome sequencing data for all U.S. VRSA strains isolated to date (2), they proposed that the development of resistance to vancomycin is an independent event in VRSA strains. It was our pleasure to read their article. We found that our resu...

Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA), an important multidrug-resistant organism of public health concern, has been infrequently identified in the United States since 2002. All previous VRSA isolates belonged to clonal complex 5, a lineage associated primarily with health care. This report describes the most recent (13th) U.S. VRSA isolate, the first to be community associated.

Vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) infections, which are always methicillin-resistant, are a rare but serious public health concern. We examined 2 cases in Michigan in 2007. Both patients had underlying illnesses. Isolates were vanA-positive. VRSA was neither transmitted to or from another known VRSA patient nor transmitted from patients to identified contacts.

Five of the seven cases of vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA) infection identified to date have occurred in southeastern Michigan. VRSA isolates from the four most recent cases (all from Michigan) were characterized. The vanA gene was localized to a single plasmid in each VRSA isolate. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of chromosomal DNA and the restriction profile of...

BACKGROUND There is increasing frequency of vancomycin-intermediate and -resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VISA and VRSA) isolates identified in clinical practice. There are limited reports evaluating susceptibility patterns and molecular characteristics of these strains. METHODS Laboratory analysis was performed on 13 VRSA and 33 VISA isolates, including susceptibility testing by broth microd...

OBJECTIVE To test the survival of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) inside lymphocyte that contributes to the pathogenesis of infection and possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effect of nanoconjugated vancomycin against in vivo S. aureus infection in a dose and duration dependent manner. METHODS 5×10(6) CFU/mL vancomycin-sensitive S. aureus (VSSA) and vancomycin-resistive S. aureus (...

Emergence of Vancomycin Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) and Vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (VRSA), though reported less frequently , is a serious matter of concern. It perhaps indicates the impending development and spread of VRSA posing the greatest risk to the patients and threat to the clinicians and microbiologists alike. Article by Chaudhary et al (2010) is interestin...

Objective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible antioxidant effects of nanoconjugated vancomycin against VRSA infection on select makers of oxidative damage and antioxidant status in spleen. Methods. A coagulase-positive VRSA strain was used for this study. VRSA infection was developed in Swiss mice by intraperitoneal injection of 5 × 10(6) CFU/mL bacterial solutions. VRSA-...
