Acute supraglottitis is a medical emergency as it can rapidly lead to airway compromise. With routine pediatric immunization for Hemophilus influenzae serotype b, supraglottitis is now more prevalent in adults, with a shift in the causative organisms and a change in the natural history of this disease. Here, we present a case of supraglottitis due to group B streptococcus that occurred in an ad...
We report a case of an acute necrotizing supraglottitis in a healthy patient. Only seven cases of necrotizing epiglottitis/supraglottitis have been reported in medical literature; all in immunocompromised patients. The features and characteristics of necrotizing epiglottitis are discussed with review of all previously reported cases.
OBJECTIVE The aim of this article is to study the clinical features, management, and outcome in adult patients with acute supraglottitis. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review. METHODS We searched the medical records from our database from the years 1989 to 2009 using codes of international statistical classification of diseases and related health problems for acute epiglottitis or supraglottit...
We report a case of fulminant supraglottitis with dramatic external cervical swelling due to associated cellulitis. Blood cultures were positive for Neisseria meningitidis. The patient recovered completely after emergency fiberoptic intubation and appropriate antibiotic therapy. We summarize five other cases of meningococcal supraglottitis, all reported since 1995, and discuss possible pathophy...
INTRODUCTION Adult supraglottitis is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition, characterised by inflammation of the supraglottic structures of the larynx, namely the arytenoids, the false vocal cords, the laryngeal ventricles, the aryepiglottic folds and the epiglottis. This condition presents a diagnostic challenge owing to the nonspecific nature of the clinical presentation. Patie...
We describe the CT appearance of supraglottitis and its complications in three adults. The most common CT findings were thickening of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, false and true vocal cords, obliteration of the preepiglottic fa, thickening of the platysma muscle, and reticulation of the subcutaneous fat. Multiple loculated fluid-density collections consistent with abscesses were seen in...
The recrudescence and modification of radiation effects precipitated by the use of chemotherapeutic agents has been reported extensively in the literature. The recall of quiescent radiation effects such as dermatitis, enteritis, esophagitis, pneumonitis, and mucositis has been most commonly associated with dactinomycin (actinomytin D) and doxorubicin (Adriamycin, Adria Laboratories, Columbus, O...
Aim To assess the diagnostic performance of lateral radiograph of the neck for supraglottitis in adults and children. Methods Electronic database searches (including PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform) were carried out through July 2014. Citations of included studies and recent narrative reviews were searched. Studies that compared ...
