A study is presented of the post-buckling behavior and imperfection-sensitivity of complete spherical shells subject to uniform external pressure. The study builds on and extends the major contribution to spherical shell buckling by W.T. Koiter in the 1960’s. Numerical results are presented for the axisymmetric large deflection behavior of perfect spheres followed by an extensive analysis of th...

The buckling behavior of rod strings in wellbore is one of the key issues in petroleum engineering. The slender rod strings in vertical wellbore were selected as research objects. Based on the energy method, the critical load formulas of sinusoidal and helical buckling were derived for the string with the bottom of the wellbore pressure. According to the sinusoidal and helical buckling’s geomet...

We present results from an experimental and numerical investigation on the compression, and consequent buckling, of a slender rod constrained inside a horizontal cylinder. An experimental model system is developed to systematically study the sequence of instabilities from straight-to-sinusoidal and sinusoidal-to-helical configurations. We quantify the associated buckling loads as a function of ...

This study is to analyse the dynamical instability (or the buckling) of a steel space truss using the accurate solutions obtained by the high-order Taylor series method. One is used to obtain numerical solutions for analysing instability, because it is difficult to find the analytic solution for a geometrical nonlinearity system. However, numerical solutions can yield incorrect analyses in the ...

Thermal buckling response of functionally graded plates is presented in this paper using sinusoidal shear deformation plate theory (SPT). The material properties of the plate are assumed to vary according to a power law form in the thickness direction. Equilibrium and stability equations are derived based on the SPT. The non-linear governing equations are solved for plates subjected to simply s...

We study the buckling of a two-dimensional elastica floating on a bath of dense fluid, subjected to axial compression. The sinusoidal pattern predicted by the analysis of linear stability is shown to become localized above the buckling threshold. A nonlinear amplitude equation is derived for the envelope of the pattern. These results provide a simple interpretation to the wrinkle-to-fold transi...

A numerical method is developed for calculating the buckling loads of tapered columns of regular polygon cross-section with constant volume and both clamped ends. The linear, parabolic and sinusoidal tapers are considered in numerical examples. From the numerical results, the strongest columns by the taper types and side numbers of regular polygon cross-sections are identified.

In this paper, a set of partial differential equations considering the dynamic effects coiled tubing (CT) is established based on bending theory slender beams axial loads. The analytical solution sinusoidal deformation with time term obtained. critical load during buckling and change half-wave number post-buckling are studied through introduction necessary conditions, separation constant. conta...

An analytical investigation is conducted to predict the post-buckling strength of laminated composite stiffened panels under compressive loads. When a stiffened composite panel buckles, the skin would deform into a sinusoidal mode shape, and hence induces additional moments and forces near the skin-stiffener interface region. These induced loads would cause the existing small edge delamination ...

Mechanical buckling response of isotropic and orthotropic plates using the two variable refined plate theory is presented in this paper. The takes account transverse shear effects parabolic distribution strains through thickness plate; hence it unnecessary to use correction factors. Governing equations are derived from principle virtual displacements. nonlinear strain-displacement Von Karman re...
