An algorithm for updating the evidence in the Dempster–Shafer theory is presented. The algorithm is based on an idea of indices. These indices are used to code the process of reasoning under uncertainty (the combination of evidence)using the Dempster-Shafer theory. The algorithm allows to carry out the reasoning with updating the evidence in much more efficient way than using the original Demps...
In this paper, one conflict context reasoning method based on Dempster-Shafer theory is proposed. Firstly the context conflict problems are illustrated and partitioned based on theory of evidence. Then the context model combined with Dempster-Shafer theory is presented and applied to the reasoning method based on Dempster rule of combination. The effectiveness of this method is verified with a ...
We formulate the Dempster-Shafer formalism of belief functions [Shafer 761 in the spirit of logical inference systems. Our formulation (called the belief calculus) explicitly avoids the use of set-theoretic notations. As such, it serves as an alternative for the use of the Dempster-Shafer formalism for uncertain reasoning.
Dempster-Shafer theory is widely applied to uncertainty modelling and knowledge reasoning due to its ability of expressing uncertain information. However, some conditions, such as exclusiveness hypothesis and completeness constraint, limit its development and application to a large extend. To overcome these shortcomings in Dempster-Shafer theory and enhance its capability of representing uncert...
As is well known, Dempster-Shafer theory offers an alternative approach to deal with uncertainty reasoning in expert systems and other fields. In this paper, we present two results that relate to the use of the theory. First, we present and analyze four methods to induce uncerioin rules fvlm a training instance set for Dempster-Shafer theory. This is the first attempt to do so, to the best of o...
In response to the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act 2002 and of the release of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Auditing Standard No. 5, this study develops a risk-based evidential reasoning approach for assessing the effectiveness of internal controls over financial reporting (ICoFR). This approach provides a structured methodology for assessing the effectiveness of ICo...
This paper presents a clinical diagnosis support system which combines the advantages of Dempster-Shafer theory with Bayesian networks in order to simulate the uncertain medical reasoning. We propose a hierarchical structure using Dempster-Shafer at the upper level for evaluating more general hypothesis (disease groups) and Bayesian networks at the lower level for a more accurate analysis of sp...
This paper presents a supervised classi®cation model integrating fuzzy reasoning and Dempster±Shafer propagation of evidence has been built on top of connectionist techniques to address classi®cation tasks in which vagueness and ambiguity coexist. The salient aspect of the approach is the integration within a neuro-fuzzy system of knowledge structures and inferences for evidential reasoning bas...
This paper introduces the idea of using the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence with qualitative values. Dempster-Shafer theory is a formalism for reasoning under uncertainty which may be viewed as a generalisation of probability theory with special advantages in its treatment of ambiguous data and the ignorance arising from it. Here we are interested in applying the theory when the numbers that...
