The Pyricularia genus includes several pathogenic fungi species that are associated with blast disease in more than 50 Poaceae plants (Ou 1985). Among these species, Pyricularia oryzae is the most important pathogen, due to its global distribution on plants from the Poaceae family. The blast disease caused by P. oryzae is responsible for severe losses in crops of high economic importance such a...

"Flour dust" refers to dust coming from fmely milled or othenvise processed cereal. Hypersensitivity reactions as well as irritant syrnptoms caused by flour dust constitute a well recognized occupational problem world-wide. Most data on flour dusts have been derived fiom studies on wheat (Triticum sp.) and rye (Secale cereale), and to a lesser extent on barley (Hordeum sp.) and oats (Avenea sat...

Organic acids from w heat ( Triticum aestivum), rye (Secale cereale), and barley (Hordeum vulgare, var. “G erbel” and “ Igri” ) were analysed by gas c h ro m a to g ra p h y -m ass spectrom etry. Two carboxylic acid fractions were obtained by chrom atography on Sephadex LH 20: frac tion A contained m ainly aliphatic acids, fraction B contained m ainly arom atic acids. The identified com pounds...

Rye (Secale cereale L.) is one of the most important bread grains in colder parts of Europe and its importance has been rising recently. The chemical composition of rye grain promises health benefits and it contributes to higher intake of dietary fibre. Conversely, rye baking performance is not as good as required. The baking quality is mainly affected by the activity of amylases measured as Ha...

Ethylene evolution from etiolated barley (Hordeum vulgare), wheat (Triticum aestivum), and rye (Secale cereale) seedlings during coleoptile growth followed a rhythmic pattern, with a period of about 16 h for barley and wheat and 12 h for rye seedlings. Leaf emergence disturbed the established rhythm of ethylene evolution.

Pyruvate orthophosphate dikinase has been identified in the green grains of eight cereal grasses, most of which are classified as C(3) plants. The wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Lerma Rojo) grain enzyme was further investigated: activity was low in very young grains, increased to a maximum at about 25 days after anthesis, then returned to a low level as the grain matured. It appeared to be loc...

In this present study, crude oil, fatty acid and mineral compositions of wheat (Triticum sp. L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), triticale (Triticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus.), rye (Secale cereale L.), and oat (Avena sativa L.) cultivars, respectively, from Turkey were investigated. Both the distribution of saturated fatty acids (SFA) and unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), and the mineral contents of ...

Lectins have been isolated from embryos of Secale cereale (rye) and Hordeum vulgare (barley) by affinity chromatography on immobilized N-acetylglucosamine. Both lectins are dimeric proteins of two identical subunits of mol.wt. 18000. They resemble strongly wheat-germ agglutinin with respect to their chemical, physical, biological and immunological properties.

High-resolution pollen analysis of a sediment core recovered from Paliouras lagoon (Greece) allowed us to reconstruct the environmental dynamics Halkidiki peninsula during last 4000 years. Palynological results have been interpreted and compared with detailed historical data, showing distinct phases human-landscape interactions Bronze Age until recent times. Pollen spectra revealed an environme...
