Cells of Flavobacterium johnsoniae move rapidly over surfaces by a process known as gliding motility. Gld proteins are thought to comprise the motor that propels the cell surface adhesin SprB. Cells with mutations in sprB are partially defective in motility and are also resistant to some bacteriophages. Transposon mutagenesis of a strain carrying a deletion spanning sprB identified eight mutant...
Tuberculosis remains as a serious infection disease of worldwide distribution, with high morbidity and mortality, mainly in low socio-economic condition countries. The state of emergency of tuberculosis caused by the resistant and multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, became the main threat to the tuberculosis treatment and control programs. A fast detection method for the resistant strains will a...
We have evaluated two simple, rapid and low-cost colorimetric methods for the detection of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A total of 151 M. tuberculosis strains were tested for resistance to rifampicin (RMP) and isoniazid by resazurin microplate assay (REMA) and nitrate reductase assay (NRA) in comparison with the conventional proportion method (PM) on Löwenstein-Jensen medium....
We assessed the performance of REMA in comparison with BACTEC MGIT 960 in the susceptibility testing of 80 Mycobacterium tuberculosis clinical isolates from Clemente Ferreira Institute against four drugs. REMA proved to be a rapid and accurate method, providing excellent correlation with BACTEC MGIT 960, with the exception of results for the ethambutol drug.
We evaluated the feasibility of resazurin microtiter assay (REMA) for detecting cycloserine resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The cutoff value of the critical concentration of cycloserine resistance in vitro about M. tuberculosis isolates was determined innovatively by drawing the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for the first time. The spending time of REMA ranged from 6 t...
In the present study, the effectiveness of a rapid and colorimetric nitrate reductase analysis (NRA) method and resazurin microplate assay (REMA) for rapid determination of methicillin resistance among Staphylococcus aureus was investigated. A total of 275 clinical isolates of S. aureus were included in the present study. Among these isolates, 151 had the mecA gene and were resistant to methici...
Previous research in young subjects found that rapid eye movement (REM) density is higher in those REM phases which are followed by an awakening (REM-W) than in those preceding NREM (REM-N), suggesting a 'gating role' of REM sleep toward the awakening. It is not yet known whether this evidence is maintained in elderly subjects, who display, relative to young subjects, more awakenings, different...
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to develop and assess a rapid method for pyrazinamide resistance detection in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using nicotinamide in a colorimetric resazurin assay. METHODS We have tested M. tuberculosis isolates using nicotinamide in a 96-well format with the redox indicator resazurin (REMA) and compared results using the BACTEC 460-TB system with two conce...
The microplate nitrate reductase assay (MNRA) and the rezasurin microtitre assay (REMA) were used for the susceptibility testing of 73 clinical isolates and the results were compared with those that were obtained using the Bactec 460 TB and Bactec MGIT 960 systems. The REMA and the MNRA were performed in 96-well plates. For the REMA, the concentrations of isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) ra...
