The continuum theory of sintering is used for the analysis of the stability of forging of a cylindrical powder specimen. The constitutive properties of the powder material are assumed to follow a power-law creep relationship. Temperature-coupled linear non-uniform stability analyses are carried out. Stability maps are obtained for forging of copper powder components.
The paper reports on an investigation into the various aspects of closed die cold forging of polygonal powder preforms, which have been compacted and sintered from atomized powder. It is found that for certain dimensional ratios of the preform the die pressure is minimum. An attempt has been made for the determination of the die pressures developed for given geometries of the disc during the cl...
Since 1986, more than 500 million powder forged (PF) connecting rods have been manufactured and installed in automobiles worldwide. The application of forging a preformed near-net shape consolidated from metal powder has been widely accepted since the early eighties and today is the preferred manufacturing technique for 60% of the connecting rods manufactured in North America. The remaining por...
ZTA powder with a composition of 85 wt% alumina/15 wt% zirconia was prepared by a gel precipitation method. Sinter forging was performed with this powder to enhance the mechanical properties of ZTA materials. The influence of processing flaws on mechanical properties of sinter forged materials and pressureless sintered materials was investigated. Sinter forging at 40 MPa effectively decreases p...
Forging is a manufacturing process that consists of shaping the metal using localized compression forces. The blows are delivered with a hammer (often an electric hammer) or a die. In this paper, different methods of forging (multi-directional forging, hot forging, near-beta forging, multi-axial forging, direct powder forging, warm forging and ring forging) are discussed. The main problems that...
The paper reports an investigation into the forging of solid powder circular disc with large slenderness ratio, between two flat dies. The deformation pattern during the operation is influenced by many factors, which interact with each other in a complex manner. The decisive factors are the interfacial conditions, initial relative density of the preform and the geometry of the preform. An attem...
