this study was designed to evaluate population variation and differentiation of bartail flathead, platycephalusindicus (linnaeus, 1785)in the iranian waters of the persian gulf using the morphometric and meristic characters. a total of 180 fish were collected by gill net from six stations (khormosa, bahrekan, shif, motaf, charak and bandar abbas) of iranian coasts of persian gulf including 30 f...
David B. Goldstein is Professor of Genetics in the Galton Laboratory, Department of Biology, at University College London. His training is in population genetics, and his primary contributions have been in assessing the medical and evolutionary implications of human genetic diversity. His work currently focuses on pharmacogenetics, the genetics of complex disease, and human evolution. He receiv...
Selective sweeps affect neutral genetic diversity through hitchhiking. While this effect is limited to the local genomic region of the sweep in panmictic populations, we find that in spatially-extended populations the combined effects of many unlinked sweeps can affect patterns of ancestry (and therefore neutral genetic diversity) across the whole genome. Even low rates of sweeps can be enough ...
Singapore is a small island-nation situated at the tip of the Malay Peninsular in Southeast Asia. It existed as a British colony from 1819 to 1959, interspersed by a period of Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Throughout its colonial history, Singapore has been the recipient of extensive immigration from various parts of Asia, and the same diversity is still reflected i...
The increasing availability of large-scale and high-resolution data sets in population genetics is moving the field toward a novel research agenda. Here, we show how this shift toward macrogenetics should generate new perspectives and theories allowing the description, understanding, and prediction of patterns of genetic diversity at broad spatial, temporal, and taxonomic scales.
We consider neutral evolution of a large population subject to changes in its population size. For a population with a time-variable carrying capacity we have computed the distributions of the total branch lengths of its sample genealogies. Within the coalescent approximation we have obtained a general expression – Eq. (27) – for the moments of these distributions for an arbitrary smooth depend...
