PURPOSE Photothermal therapy is an emerging cancer treatment paradigm which involves highly localized heating and killing of tumor cells, due to the presence of nanomaterials that can strongly absorb near-infrared (NIR) light. In addition to having deep penetration depths in tissue, NIR light is innocuous to normal cells. Little is known currently about the fate of nanomaterials post phototherm...

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have shown great potential in both photothermal therapy and drug delivery. In this study, a CNT derivative, hyaluronic acid-derivatized CNTs (HA-CNTs) with high aqueous solubility, neutral pH, and tumor-targeting activity, were synthesized and characterized, and then a new photodynamic therapy agent, hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME), was adsorbed onto the function...

A dendrimer porphyrin (DP)-coated gold nanoshell (AuNS-DP) was prepared for the synergistic combination of photodyanmic and photothermal therapy. The resultant AuNS-DP successfully exhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as photothermal effect for the simultaneous application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT).

introduction application of near-infrared absorbing nanostructures can induce hyperthermia, in addition to providing more efficient  photothermal effects. gold-gold sulfide (ggs) is considered as one of these nanostructures. this study was performed on a tissue-equivalent optical-thermal phantom to determine the temperature profile in the presence and absence of ggs and millisecond pulses of a ...

background and objective: multi-walled carbon nano tubes (mwcnts) as an important element of nanosciences have a remarkable absorption in the region of nir window (650-900 nm) which can overcome the limitations of deep treatment in photothermal therapy. to disperse mwcnts in water, it is proposed to attach carboxylated functional group (-cooh) to mwcnts in order to increase dispersivity in wate...

Introduction: Photothermal therapy is a method of cancer treatment that plasmonic nanoparticles are used to convert infrared light into local heat. Due to the plasmonic properties of gold nanoparticles, this compound was used as a contrast agent. The aim of this study was to synthesize gold nanoparticles with different conjugations for photothermal therapy. Methods: This research was an experi...

Photothermal stability and, therefore, consistency of both optical absorption and photoacoustic response of the plasmonic nanoabsorbers is critical for successful photoacoustic image-guided photothermal therapy. In this study, silica-coated gold nanorods were developed as a multifunctional molecular imaging and therapeutic agent suitable for image-guided photothermal therapy. The optical proper...

Photothermal therapy, as a physical therapeutic technique to kill cancer, has generated a great deal of interest. Photothermal agents hence play a critical role in this modern therapy. We report the use of transition metal oxides as photothermal agents based on PEGylated WO3-x nanoparticles. The well-prepared nanoparticles presented effective results during photothermal therapy both in vitro an...

Specialized gold nanostructures are of interest for the development of alternative treatment methods in medicine. Photothermal therapy combined with gene therapy that supports hyperthermia is proposed as a novel multimodal treatment method for prostate cancer. In this work, photothermal therapy using small (<100 nm) gold nanoparticles and near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation combined with gene...
