The seed of Croton tiglium L. (SCT) is a well known folk medicine. In China, it has used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, intestinal inflammation, rheumatism, and so on. Previous studies established its purgative and inflammation properties. In addition, the effects of essential oil of SCT on intestinal transit and gastrointestinal tract has been studied. In the present study, we evalu...
The current study investigates the influence of fruit maturity on Phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate content in Jatropha seed oil as well cake. fruits used this were harvested from three different geographical locations Botswana at four stages, namely green yellow, yellow brown and dry. Phorbol esters cake quantified using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Results reveal that phorbol ester s...

The effect of phorbol esters on the light-evoked responses of horizontal cells were studied in the turtle eyecup preparation. Phorbol esters caused a reduction in receptive field size and a significant decrease in the amplitude of responses to annular and full-field illumination; however, they caused only minor changes in responses to small spots in the receptive field centre. The dark membrane...
Phorbol esters are the tetracyclic diterpenoids generally known for their tumor promoting activity. The phorbol esters mimic the action of diacyl glycerol (DAG), activator of protein kinase C, which regulates different signal transduction pathways and other cellular metabolic activities. They occur naturally in many plants of the family Euphorbiacaeae and Thymelaeaceae. The biological activitie...
The diacylglycerol signaling pathway, involving protein kinase C (PKC) and RasGRP, is a promising therapeutic target for both cancer and other indications. The phorbol esters, ultrapotent diacylglycerol analogues, bind to and activate PKC and RasGRP. Here, using fluorescent phorbol esters and complementary fluorescent PKC and RasGRP constructs, we determined the localization of the phorbol este...
During a 24-hr incubation of GH4C1 cells with phorbol esters or thyrotropin-releasing hormone, there is a decrease in the number of phorbol esters receptors (down-modulation). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether this decrease in receptor number attenuated cellular responsiveness to subsequent challenge with phorbol esters. Accordingly, cellular sensitivity to a phorbol ester-me...
Tumor-promoting phorbol esters stimulated mouse bone marrow cells to form myeloid colonies in agar cultures without added colony-stimulating factors. The colony-stimulating ability of various phorbol esters correlated well with their ability to promote skin tumors in vivo. These results suggest that phorbol esters mimic the action of specific colony-stimulating factors that regulate growth.
The effect of 20-methylcholanthrene and phorbol esters on sterol metabolism of mouse skin was studied. When 4 beta-phorbol esters were administered to mice that were previously painted once with 20-methylcholanthrene, a depression of some sterols in skin occurred, of which that of lathosterol was most marked. This effect was not observed when the order of application was reversed. Using a metab...
