The effect of halothane on the half-life of pentobarbitone was studied in sheep. Pentobarbitone was given in a dose of 20 mg/kg and halothane was administered via a mask for periods from 30 min up to 2 hr. Concentrations of pentobarbitone in whole Hood were measured and the half-life determined. In cross-over tests giving pentobarbitone alone, and pentobarbitone and halothane to eight sheep, in...

After a search on Medline, it appears that intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbitone is often used for anaesthesia and euthanasia of rodents. In the present pilot study in rats, spinal nociception after intraperitoneal injection of sodium pentobarbitone, with and without lidocaine, was examined by estimation of the number of c-fos-expressing neurones in the spinal dorsal horn. One grou...

Deoni cow urine was evaluated for its effect on pentobarbitone induced sleeping time in wistar rats. Five groups with ten males and ten females were separately administered with distilled water (control), Chloramphenicol 100 mg/kg i.p, Phenobarbitone sodium 80 mg/kg i.p, cow urine 0.25 ml/kg p.o, cow urine 0.5 ml/kg p.o for seven days. After 30 min of last dose treatment pentobarbitone sodium 3...

1. The dose of pentobarbitone required for anaesthesia was significantly greater for dystrophic hamsters than for normal animals. 2. Serum creatine kinase activity was significantly higher in dystrophic than in normal hamsters. 3. Brain, heart and tibialis anterior muscle from dystrophic animals contained significantly less creatine kinase than the normal tissues. 4. Creatine kinase in normal a...

We have studied the effects of ketamine and pentobarbitone on acetylcholine (ACh) release from the rat frontal cortex using microdialysis. Ketamine 25, 50 and 100 mg kg-1 increased ACh release from the frontal cortex to 286%, 253% and 381% of basal release, respectively. In contrast, pentobarbitone 10, 20 and 40 mg kg-1 caused 73%, 78% and 96% inhibition of basal levels, respectively. The resul...

1. Using the single-electrode voltage clamp technique, three calcium current components were recorded at 35 degrees C from mouse dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurones in culture. A transient low-threshold calcium current (T current) was recorded at clamp potentials (Vc) positive to -60 mV. Holding potentials (Vh) at or negative to -90 mV were required to fully remove inactivation. A large transie...

The interaction of pentobarbitone sodium with three analeptics viz. micoren, pentylenetetrazol and methedrine was studied in mice. Micoren prolonged pentobarbitone sleeping time. pentylenetetrazol shortened the sleeping time. Methedrine also shortened the sleeping time, but clonic convulsions of mild to severe intensity were noticed 45-60 minutes after the drug injection.

The distribution and excretion of pentobarbitone were studied, using macroautoradiography, in two groups of rats at times ranging from 1 min to 70 min after the i.v. injection of 100 muCi given as 30 mg/kg of 14C-pentobarbitone. In a control group, the carbon-14 concentration (concentration of pentobarbitone) in the brain remained always greater than that in heart blood (unchanged pentobarbiton...

Doses of 100, 150 and 200 micrograms kg-1 of the cholinesterase inhibitor neostigmine reverse the anaesthetic action of ketamine. The antagonistic effect is increased as the dose is increased. The duration of anaesthesia induced by pentobarbitone is reversed by the cholinesterase inhibitor in doses of 150, 200 and 250 micrograms kg-1. Choline, in a dose of 50 mg kg-1, significantly antagonizes ...
