Paecilomyces variotii is a commonly occurring species in air and food, but it is also associated with many types of human infections and is among the emerging causative agents of opportunistic mycoses in immunocompromised hosts. Paecilomyces can cause hyalohyphomycosis, and two species, Paecilomyces lilacinus and P. variotii, are the most frequently encountered organisms. In the present study, ...

The natural durability of wood to mold fungi was tested under laboratory conditions with locally sourced Citharexylum spinosum and Morus alba woods. The mold fungi were Penicillium selerotigenum, Paecilomyces variotii, and Aspergillus niger. Changes in surface elemental composition were evaluated with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and the biodeterioration of wood surfaces by scanni...

Paecilomyces variotii is a common cosmopolitan species that is able to spoil various food- and feedstuffs and is frequently encountered in heat-treated products. However, isolates from heat-treated products rarely form ascospores. In this study we examined by using molecular techniques and mating tests whether this species can undergo a sexual cycle and form ascospores. The population structure...

Sinapic acid biotransformation was studied and screened using eleven fungal cultures. Penicillium chermesinum AUMC 275, Aspergillus ochraceus 11328, Paecilomyces variotii 5618 showed positive results in the production of metabolites. resulted gallic after 10 days incubation with P. chermesinum, protocatechuic 7 A. ochraceus, ferulic 5 variotii. The MICs and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) of amphotericin B, miconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, fluconazole, and flucytosine for 52 isolates of Paecilomyces species were evaluated by the broth microdilution method, largely based on the recommendations of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (document M27-A). The fungal isolates tested included 16 P. variotii...

Four cases of peritonitis caused by the filamentous fungus Paecilomyces variotii in patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are reported. Removal of the Tenckhoff catheter and antifungal chemotherapy led to resolution of symptoms in all cases. Possible contaminating events are discussed, and reported infections with P. variotii are reviewed.

Fungi, particularly molds that are cosmopolitan in soils, are frequent etiologic agents of opportunistic mycoses. Members of the Fusarium solani and Fusarium oxysporum species complexes are the most commonly implicated etiologic agents of opportunistic fusarial infections in mammals, while Paecilomyces variotii is one of the most frequently encountered Paecilomyces species in human infections. ...

Subsequent to this, 34 laboratories across England and one from Northern Ireland have reported identification of 77 Paecilomyces variotii isolates from normally sterile sites, nearly all from blood culture, to the HPA. The HPA Mycology Reference Laboratory (MRL) would usually receive only 5 or 6 P. variotii isolates per year. No source for the suspected contamination has yet been identified. Di...

Byssochlamys spectabilis no. 5 (anamorph Paecilomyces variotii no. 5) (NBRC109023) was isolated from a soil sample in 2001 in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. This fungus is highly resistant to formaldehyde. Here, we report a draft genome sequence of P. variotii no. 5; this draft was produced with the intent of investigating the mechanism of formaldehyde resistance. This is the first report of the g...

Biotransformation of p-coumaric acid by Paecilomyces variotii resulted in the accumulation of a metabolite which was identified as p-hydroxybenzoic acid. We studied the possibility of enhancing this metabolite by various parameters such as varying the concentration of substrate, addition of different nitrogen sources and carbon sources at varying concentration and use of different agricultural ...
