Real-time multimedia conferencing tools over the Internet have become attractive in the past few years. Many tools, such as VIC and Windows NetMeeting, have been designed to hold Internet conferences. However, these two video conferencing tools cannot communicate with each other. In this paper, we design and implement a tool which is based on VIC but can set up conferences with Windows NetMeeting.

Effective collaboration in simulation modelling is possibly one of the key factors in the success of a simulation project. Computer Supported Cooperative Work is a research field that has investigated this in other domains. This field has led to the technological development of software, or groupware, to facilitate group working. This paper investigates the appropriateness of groupware in simul...

Simulation modellers are major users of software tools. Advances in computing such as collaborative working tools and distributed technologies have created new possibilities for innovation in simulation modelling. Collectively, we address these as Collaborative Support for Simulation Modelling (CSSM). To contribute to CSSM, we consider the problem of whether or not it is possible to support hum...

C omputer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) or groupware systems allow physically dispersed teams to engage in a common task by providing an interface to a shared workspace.1 Real-time cooperative editing systems extend the usefulness of CSCW applications by allowing team members to simultaneously view and edit shared documents. Both the CSCW and distributed computing communities have addressed...

The use of the Internet to enable communication between instructors and remote students in a format similar to that used for office hours is a typical feature of many Web-based distance education systems. Virtual office hours (VOH) using the Internet can be established using simple asynchronous tools such as e-mail or discussion lists. A much more effective approach uses synchronous, real-time,...

In this paper we evaluate the performance of the ISL’s German Verbmobil spontaneous speech recognizer on the Nespole! database. In this task, people talk to an agent in a tourist office to plan their holidays via a NetMeeting connection, also sharing screen contents (web-pages). Stereo recordings were made both before and after speech transmission over an IP connection using the G.711 codec, so...

This paper discusses the domain of Army logistics planning at the level of the ODSCLOG (Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics) and describes tools to assist in this planning. In particular, we have developed a prototype collaboratory (CLINT) for logistics planning that relies on Microsoft NetMeeting TM as the collaborative infrastructure, and a tool named THREADS to support logistic...

We developed a Web-based intervention for pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) and examined its feasibility for participants with limited computer experience. Six families, including parents, siblings, and children with TBI, were given computers, Web cameras, and high-speed Internet access. Weekly videoconferences with the therapist were conducted after participants completed on-line interact...
