COVID-19, a clinical syndrome caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) became pandemic following an outbreak of viral pneumonitis, first identified in Wuhan, China. The disease manifestations vary ranging from mild upper respiratory tract infection to severe acute distress (ARDS) and even death. HELLP syndrome is most often diagnosed between 27 and 37 weeks gestation. It is also a diagnosis that can be seen during the postpartum period. The effects of HELLP syndrome on the neonate can be significant. Recognizing the risks to the neonate can assist the clinician in preparing for the neonate prior to delivery. In doing so, the mortality and morbidity rates can be reduced.

The immune response of the neonate is poor and is dependent on passive immunity provided by maternal Ig. However, here we show that exposure of the neonate to environmental antigens induces a germinal center (GC) reaction. In the peripheral blood of premature infants one finds IgG class switched B cells expressing a selected V-gene repertoire. These data suggest that restrictions in the reperto...

We report the anaesthetic management of a mother, and airway management of a neonate with a prenatal diagnosis of cervical cystic hygroma causing upper airway obstruction. The mortality of such neonates due to upper airway obstruction is reported to exceed 20% following deliveries. Elective Caesarean section was performed under general anaesthesia, and in utero tracheal intubation of the neonat...

Transplacental transmission of rubella virus leads to Congenital Rubella Syndrome. It is comprised of congenital cardiac defects (most commonly patent ductus arteriosus), cataracts and sensorineural hearing loss. While prematurity and intra uterine growth retardation are frequent accompaniments of congenital rubella syndrome, at times birth weight can be normal. The possibility of fetal anomali...

In adults, psychological stress regulates immune responsiveness in part via the increased levels of corticosterone that are produced as a result of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation. However, there is a lack of knowledge as to the role such regulation may play in the neonate. Neonates are severely compromised in their ability to generate an immune response to pathogens encoun...
