Microgenetic  method  is  a  specific  method  for  studying  change  in  abilities,  knowledge,  and understanding  during  short  time  spans,  through  dense  observations,  and  over  a  relatively  long period of time. In this paper I will attempt to provide a brief overview of microgenetic method and will point out its potential advantages and disadvantages in the context of second langua...

Parnafes and diSessa [this issue] present a useful description of the process of doing microgenetic analysis of qualitative data and report interesting findings about how students’ reasoning changes as they gain relevant experience. We are pleased that microgenetic approaches are being applied to educational issues and agree with the authors that new knowledge can be gained by closely examining...

Microgenetic methods were used to document young children’s (N = 36; M age = 3;5) acquisition of false belief (FB) understanding and investigate developmental mechanisms. A control group received no experience with FB; 2 other groups received microgenetic sessions designed to promote FB understanding. Over consecutive weeks, microgenetic groups received implicit feedback about their performance...

Change is an inevitable, but important aspect of our lives. Football teams travel up and down the leagues, governments come and go, we make the transition from nursery to school, school to college or a job and then from job to job. As change affects everyone and is so endemic, it is crucial that psychologists have an adaptable approach to measure it. Yet, paradoxically in attempting to identify...

this study investigated how group formation method, namely student-selected vs. teacher-assigned, influences the results of the community model of teaching creative writing; i.e., group dynamics and group outcome (the quality of performance). the study adopted an experimental comparison group and microgenetic research design to observe the change process over a relatively short period of time. ...

A design that included both microgenetic and cross-sectional components was used to examine 135 Slovenian children's acquisition of matrix completion proficiency and compare microgenetic and age-related changes on the task. The microgenetic analyses indicated that children's errors became increasingly variable shortly before they discovered the correct strategy, that the correct strategy became...

Educational Data Mining (EDM) methods can expand the reach of microgenetic research. This paper presents an example of our pilot work using microgenetic analysis in the context of fraction game data, where we characterize student activity based on clustered sequences of actions. We cluster sequences by the similarity between them, calculated using optimal matching techniques.
