The Mahalanobis distance is commonly used in multi-object trackers for measurement-to-track association. Starting with the original definition of the Mahalanobis distance we review its use in association. Given that there is no principle in multi-object tracking that sets the Mahalanobis distance apart as a distinguished statistical distance we revisit the global association hypotheses of multi...
Based on the reasoning expressed by Mahalanobis in his original article, the present article extends the Mahalanobis distance beyond the set of normal distributions. Sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness are studied, and some properties derived. Since many statistical methods use the Mahalanobis distance as e vehicle, e.g. the method of least squares and the chi-square hypothesis t...
To classify time series by nearest neighbor, we need to specify or learn a distance. We consider several variations of the Mahalanobis distance and the related Large Margin Nearest Neighbor Classification (LMNN). We find that the conventional Mahalanobis distance is counterproductive. However, both LMNN and the class-based diagonal Mahalanobis distance are competitive.
This paper presents a general notion of Mahalanobis distance for functional data that extends the classical multivariate concept to situations where the observed data are points belonging to curves generated by a stochastic process. More precisely, a new semi-distance for functional observations that generalize the usual Mahalanobis distance for multivariate datasets is introduced. For that, th...
In this work, we propose a scalable and fast algorithm to learn a Mahalanobis distance metric. The key issue in this task is to learn an optimal Mahalanobis matrix in this distance metric. It has been shown in the statistical learning theory [?] that increasing the margin between different classes helps to reduce the generalization error. Hence, our algorithm formulates the Mahalanobis matrix a...
this study is made to find out the variations of the outer body morphology of luciobarbus mystaceus (pallas, 1814) belonging cyprinidae family that lived in tigris river system between january 2015 and december 2015 with geometric morphometric methods depending on gender, age and season. after being caught with fishnet having different meshes and brought to the laboratory, in total 58 (21♀♀, 37...
