The dispersed particles of magnetorheological fluid form stable chain-like clusters under the magnetic field, and show an effect of controllable flowability and shape. Based on this characteristic, using migration magnetic acted on the magnetorheological fluid, the object directional migration can be realized, and then the magnetorheological fluid forms levitation at the same time, which has li...

Training equipment used by professional sportsmen has a great impact on their sport performance. Most universal exercisers may help only to improve the general physical condition due to the specific kinematics and peculiar resistance generated by their loading units. Training of effective techniques and learning of psychomotor skills are possible only when exercisers conform to the movements an...

Magnetorheological (MR) materials and shear thickening fluids are both smart material and their combination could offer both MR and ST effects. This study looks at the properties and behaviour of magnetorheological shear thickening fluid (MRSTF) in particular whilst applied as a semi-active energy absorber. A device with two forms of varying vibration control has been created and measured. The ...

Commercial applications of magnetorheological (MR) fluids often require operation at elevated temperatures as a result of surrounding environmental conditions or intense localized viscous heating. Previous experimental investigations of thermal effects on MR fluids have reported significant reductions in the magnetorheological stress with increasing temperature, exceeding the predictions made b...

One of the newly developed methods for obtaining super finished surfaces for freeform is Magnetorheological finishing (MRF). MRF is an advanced finishing process in which the grinding force is controlled by magnetic field. The material removal in MRF is governed by the magnetorheological fluid which mainly consists of carbonyl iron (CI), abrasives particles, carrier fluids and additives. MRF pr...

We report on magnetorheological finishing (MRF) spotting experiments performed on glasses and ceramics using a zirconia-coated carbonyl-iron (CI)-particle-based magnetorheological (MR) fluid. The zirconia-coated magnetic CI particles were prepared via sol-gel synthesis in kilogram quantities. The coating layer was approximately 50-100 nm thick, faceted in surface structure, and well adhered. Co...

We formulate a model for acoustic excitations in a magnetorheological fluid. Constitutive equations are derived for Navier-Stokes flow coupled with Maxwell’s Equations. The viscosity of the fluid is modified to reflect the dependence of waves propagating within the fluid itself and in the case where they propagate along the network of particles.

A theoretical/experimental activity has been carried out on a magnetorheological fluid brake prototype. A non-linear observer and an optimal control have been designed and tested on the physical device. Both the feedback control and the state observer are based on the state dependent Riccati equation technique. A first order non-linear dynamic model has been derived and adopted for the developm...

The overall goal of the research conducted in this paper is to develop next generation force feedback systems by combining novel Magnetorheological (MR) fluid based systems with microstructural analysis and advanced control system design. Two MR fluid based telerobotic systems are designed, prototyped and tested with medical applications. Force feedback control is employed to replicate in the m...

In this paper, we consider the implementation of a static H∞ output feedback controller to a quarter vehicle suspension system with a semi-active magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper. Unlike most of the existing literature, all the states in the equation of motion are relative displacements and velocities between sprung, unsprung masses and road disturbance instead, in addition the input to th...
