Distributions of a-MLVA codes and sequence types in the three E. coli populations are found in detail in Supplementary materials 1-3. We show: 1) The number of isolates found in each cluster of sequence types and a-MLVA codes 2) The sequence type and the corresponding a-MLVA code (or a-MLVA codes in case more than one a-MLVA code was identified for the specific ST) 3) We also show cases where m...

This study describes a new multilocus variable number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) typing system for the discrimination of Chlamydia trachomatis genovar D to K isolates or specimens. We focused our MLVA scheme on genovar E which predominates in most populations worldwide. This system does not require culture and therefore can be performed directly on DNA extracted from positive clinical...

BACKGROUND Molecular typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is required to study the routes and rates of transmission of this pathogen. Currently available typing techniques are either resource-intensive or have limited discriminatory ability. Multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) may provide an alternative high throughput molecular typing tool with ...

Surveillance of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis is generally considered to benefit from molecular techniques like multiple-locus variable-number of tandem repeats analysis (MLVA), which allow early detection and confinement of outbreaks. Here, a surveillance study, including phage typing, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and MLVA on 1,535 S. Enteritidis isolates coll...

Campylobacter jejuni is a common cause of the frequently reported food-borne diseases in developed and developing nations. This study describes the development of multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) analysis (MLVA) using capillary electrophoresis as a novel typing method for microbial source tracking and epidemiological investigation of C. jejuni. Among 36 tandem repeat loci det...

In the present study, a multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) was used to assess the molecular epidemiology of Neisseria gonorrhoeae clinical isolates originating from different regions of Russia. MLVA, based on seven loci, was performed on 218 isolates that were previously tested for susceptibility to penicillin, tetracycline and ciprofloxacin and for the presence of cer...

A panel of seven variable-number tandem-repeat (VNTR) markers was selected for Acinetobacter baumannii typing analysis (MLVA-7). Compared with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), MLVA-7 provided greater discrimination. We modified the criteria for MLVA complex assignments proposed previously, and a remarkable congruence between MLVA-7- and PFGE-based strain clustering was observed.

This study evaluates the multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat assay (MLVA) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) when using restriction enzymes BstZI, SacII, and ApaI to fingerprint a diverse collection of methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sequence type 398 (ST398) isolates. These isolates had been characterized previously by multilocus sequence typin...

We compared multilocus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA) and macrorestriction endonuclease analysis using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) to determine their utility to identify clusters of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) among 91 isolates of PCR ribotype 027 (NAP1, for North American pulsed-field type 1) from nine hospitals (and 10 general practitioners associated with...

Multilocus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) is a subtyping technique for characterizing human pathogenic bacteria such as enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157. We determined the phylogeny of 202 epidemiologically unrelated EHEC O157:H7/H- clinical isolates through 8 MLVA loci obtained in Germany during 1987-2008. Biodiversity in the loci ranged from 0.66 to 0.90. Four of ...
