This chapter is about numerical methods for a particular type of equation expressed as a matrix equality. The Lyapunov equation is the most common problem in the class of problems called matrix equations. Other examples of matrix equations: Sylvester equation, Stein equation, Riccati equation. Definition 5.0.1 Consider two square matrices A, W ∈ Rn×n. The problem to find a square matrix X ∈ Rn×...
In this paper, we propose a Lyapunov function design method using a difference approximation scheme and quantization of the Markov process. First, we approximate a Lyapunov equation by a Schrödinger-like equation. Second, we obtain sufficient conditions for a function to be a Lyapunov function. Then, we provide a Lyapunov function design procedure.
Abstract: A new method to solve a Lyapunov equation for a discrete delay system is proposed. Using this method, a Lyapunov equation can be solved from a simple linear equation and N -th power of a constant matrix, where N is the state delay. Combining a Lyapunov equation and frequency domain stability, a new stability condition is proposed for a discrete state delay system whose state delay is ...
The delay Lyapunov equation is an important matrix boundary-value problem which arises as an analogue of the Lyapunov equation in the study of time-delay systems ẋ(t) = A0x(t) +A1x(t− τ) +B0u(t). We propose a new algorithm for the solution of the delay Lyapunov equation. Our method is based on the fact that the delay Lyapunov equation can be expressed as a linear system of equations, whose unkn...
The Lyapunov stability method is the most popular and applicable stability analysis tool of nonlinear dynamic systems. However, there are some bottlenecks in the Lyapunov method, such as need for negative definiteness of the Lyapunov function derivative in the direction of the system’s solutions. In this paper, we develop a new theorem to dispense the need for negative definite-ness of Lyapunov...
We consider the Lyapunov equation for the linear dynamics, which arises naturally when one seeks for a Lyapunov function with a uniform, exact decrease. In this setting, a solution to the Lyapunov equation has been characterized only for quadratic Lyapunov functions. We demonstrate that the Lyapunov equation is a well-posed equation for strictly stable dynamics and a much more general class of ...
This paper deals with an efficient algorithm for dampers’ viscosity optimization in mechanical systems. Our algorithm optimizes the trace of the solution of the corresponding Lyapunov equation using an iterative method which calculates a low rank Cholesky factor for the solution of the corresponding Lyapunov equation. We have shown that the new algorithm calculates the trace in O(m) flops per i...
