Low-energy, distortion-free femtosecond pulse laser inscription in coated freestanding fiber is demonstrated for the first time. Methodology features radial plane beamshaping to achieve optimal focusing and spot-like inscription within the fiber. Strong, firstorder fiber Bragg grating is achieved in coated single-mode fiber using only 50nJ pulse energy.

We report on an incidence angle influence on inscription of the Fiber Bragg Gratings in Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fibers. We have shown experimentally that there is a strong preference of certain angles, labeled ГK, over the other ones. Angles close to ГK showed fast start of inscription, rapid inscription and stronger gratings. We have also shown that grati...

We report observations and measurements of the inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in two different types of microstructured polymer optical fiber: few-mode and an endlessly single mode. Contrary to the FBG inscription in silica microstructured fiber, where high-energy laser pulses are a prerequisite, we have successfully used a low-power cw laser source operating at 325 nm to produce 1 ...

We report what is to our knowledge the first photochemical fabrication of a long-period grating in a pure-fused-silica photonic crystal fiber. The inscription technique is based on a two-photon absorption mechanism and does not require a specially designed photonic crystal fiber with a photosensitive Ge-doped core. The characteristic fluence value for the inscription is an order of magnitude le...

Yan-Bin Jia Michael Erdmann The Robotics Institute School of Computer Science Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213-3891 Abstract Industrial assembly involves sensing the pose (orientation and position) of a part. E cient and reliable sensing strategies can be developed for an assembly task if the shape of the part is known in advance. In this paper we investigate the problem of deter...

Stereotypically, computation involves intrinsic changes to the medium of representation: writing new symbols, erasing old symbols, turning ears, flipping switches, sliding abacus beads. Perspectival computation leaves the original inscriptions untouched. The problem solver obtains the output by merely alters his orientation toward the input. There is no rewriting or copying of the input inscrip...

A series of waveguides was inscribed in a borosilicate glass (BK7) by an 11 MHz repetition rate femtosecond laser operating with pulse energies from 16 to 30 nJ and focused at various depths within the bulk material. The index modification was measured using a quantitative phase microscopy technique that revealed central index changes ranging from 5 x 10(-3) to 10(-2), leading to waveguides tha...

the present paper is about an inscription from the parthian era which has been found in the town of sar-e pol-e zohab in the province of kirmanshah. this parthian bas-relief is about two people on the two sides of the bas-relief inscription. the investigation on the right-handside, due to erosion is not quite readable, but the left-handside inscription had been formerly read and believed to be ...

The influence of the fiber geometry on the point-by-point inscription of fiber Bragg gratings using a femtosecond laser is highlighted. Fiber Bragg gratings with high spectral quality and strong first-order Bragg resonances within the C-band are achieved by optimizing the inscription process. Large birefringence (1.2x10(-4)) and high degree of polarization-dependent index modulation are observe...
