BACKGROUND Several generic imipenem/cilastatin formulations have been approved by Thai FDA and a generic imipenem/cilastatin (Yungjin) has been available in SirirajHospital since 2007. Since imipenem/cilastatin is usually given to the patients with serious hospital-acquired infections, the generic imipenem/cilastatin must be therapeutically equivalent to the original imipenem/cilastatin. The ob...
The aim was to explore the antimicrobial activity of a synthetic peptide (AMP38) and its synergy with imipenem against imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The main mechanism of imipenem resistance is the loss or alteration of protein OprD. Time-kill and minimal biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) determinations were carried out by using clinical imipenem-resistant strains. AMP38 was...
Imipenem is renally metabolized to the stable open-lactam metabolite by a dipeptidase, dehydropeptidase I, located at the lumenal surface of the proximal tubular cells. In humans the degree of hydrolysis shows marked intersubject variability but minimal intrasubject variability. In healthy subjects the urinary recovery of unchanged imipenem ranged from 5.5% to 42.5% of the dose. Cilastatin inhi...
We describe a case of bacteremia due to imipenem-susceptible Shewanella algae. Despite treatment with imipenem, the patient developed a spinal epidural abscess, from which imipenem-resistant S. algae was isolated. The development of resistance should be monitored when S. algae infection is treated with imipenem, even though the strain is initially susceptible to imipenem.
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE To investigate the in vitro and in vivo activity of imipenem-colistin combination against multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae infections in order to determine whether it should be explored further. METHODS The antimicrobial activity of colistin alone and in combination with imipenem was assessed versus an imipenem-susceptible isolate, E. cloacae GN1059, or an imipenem-...
Chemotherapy of tuberculosis caused by multiple-drug-resistant (MDR) strains is problematic because of choices limited to relatively inefficacious and toxic drugs. Some beta-lactam antibiotics are active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro. We investigated the efficacy of imipenem in a mouse model of tuberculosis and in humans with MDR tuberculosis. Mice infected with M. tuberculosis st...
incidence of imipenem-resistant acinetobacter baumannii in a general intensive care unit (icu)
We describe imipenem-resistant and imipenem-susceptible clinical isolates of Clostridium difficile ribotype 017 in Portugal. All ribotype 017 isolates carried an extra penicillin-binding protein gene, pbp5, and the imipenem-resistant isolates had additional substitutions near the transpeptidase active sites of pbp1 and pbp3. These clones could disseminate and contribute to imipenem resistance.
Although imipenem has in vitro activity against Enterococcus faecalis and Food and Drug Administration-approved indications for treatment of infections caused by this microorganism, there are no NCCLS guidelines for susceptibility testing of imipenem versus enterococci. Therefore, the in vitro activities of penicillin, ampicillin, imipenem, and vancomycin against 201 blood isolates of E. faecal...
BACKGROUND Carbapenem-resistance is an extremely growing medical threat in antibacterial therapy as the incurable resistant strains easily develop a multi-resistance action to other potent antimicrobial agents. Nonetheless, the protective delivery of current antibiotics using nano-carriers opens a tremendous approach in the antimicrobial therapy, allowing the nano-formulated antibiotics to beat...
