Fishes, in general, follow ammonotelic mode of excretion. However, certain stress factors may provoke them to excrete urea. In the present study, the possible role of ureogenesis to avoid accumulation of toxic ammonia under water-restricted condition was tested in Heteropneustes fossilis. A total of hundred fishes were collected and sacrificed. Excretory urea and ammonia were estimated in the w...
The acetylcholine content of various organs of two teleostean fish, Heteropneustes fossilis and Clarias batrachus has been estimated biologically on the eserinized frog rectus muscle. The acetylcholine content in the stomach of both the fish was 0.341 and 0.22 mug/g, respectively. Values were lower than those of other parts of the alimentary tract. The ilia contained the most acetylcholine, bei...
Effect of Formulated Feed as a Subsitute for Live on Growth Performances, Biochemical Composition and Digestive Enzyme Activities Asian Stinging Catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch, 1794) Larvae
Biochemical Changes in Blood of Freshwater Catfish Heteropneustes fossilis Exposed to Microcystin-LR
Present study reveals the effects of microcystin-LR (2.5 μg/25g bw) toxins on certain biochemical parameters in blood of H. fossilis. In treated fish serum bilirubin, serum cholesterol, serum creatinine and serum urea levels are increased. Serum protein content of treated fish is decreased. Present study suggests that MCLR is toxic to fresh water catfish Heteropneustes fossilis.
During the past number of years the value of antioxidant therapy, has been investigated thoroughly. In the present investigation, elucidate the effect of alpha-tocopherol in liver of freshwater catfish Heteropneustes fossilis under oxidative stress. As is well known, Liver is the vital organ of the body and not only performs a large number of functions but it also play a crucial role for detoxi...
The present paper deals with the effect of endosulfan on Ascorbic acid content in the alimentary canal of Heteropneustes fossilis. This fish exposed so sub lethal concentration of endosulfan for a period of one month. The results revealed that the ascorbic acid content of alimentary canal was decreased in intoxicated fishes.
A functional urea cycle with both cytosolic (ARG I) and mitochondrial (ARG II) arginase activity is present in the liver of an ureogenic air-breathing teleost, Heteropneustes fossilis. Antibodies against mammalian ARG II showed no cross-reactivity with the H. fossilis ARG II. ARG II was purified to homogeneity from H. fossilis liver. Purified ARG II showed a native molecular mass of 96 kDa. SDS...
The objective of this study is to determine the effect of Cadmium (a heavy metal) on Catalase activity on tissues of liver, kidney and gill of freshwater air breathing Teleost fish (Heteropneustes fossilis). Catalase, a oxido-reductase enzyme play an important role in anti-oxidant defence System which protect animal from oxidative stress. Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), a medicinally important...
The present investigation was carried out to compare the alterations of digestive enzymes like amylase, lipase, and protease activities in three teleostean fishes viz., Anabas testudineus, Heteropneustes fossilis and Oreochromis niloticus after application of almix herbicide for 30 days at rice field concentration i.e., 8 g/acre. Highest amylase activity was observed in intestine of A. testudin...
Cypermethrin was administered to Heteropneustes fossilis in chronic concentration to determine lesion of liver as indicators of tissue damage. The cypermethrin dose used was 1/4 of 96 hr LC50. Histopathological changes in liver ranged from vacuolization, necrosis, fibrosis of perivascular region and disposition of yellow brown grains at different time of exposure viz; 20th, 30th, 40th and 60th ...
