BACKGROUND Hearing Preservation is becoming increasingly important in cochlear implantation as there is growing evidence that preserving the residual hearing, especially in the low frequencies in combination with the electric stimulation can significantly improve hearing and speech outcomes in noise. Besides the ongoing development of atraumatic implant electrodes and insertion techniques, the ...

Objective To review and assess the ideal length of electrode in cochlear implant patients for hearing preservation. Methods The English language literature was reviewed for studies including hearing preservation and speech understanding for electrodes of different lengths. Results One prospective trial was found, and there were no studies that randomized patients into different length elect...

Hearing preservation is exceedingly difficult in vestibular schwannoma surgery, especially with increasing tumor size. We herein report a case of hearing preservation in a 2.7 cm vestibular schwannoma, where the patient maintained her pre-operative hearing threshold of 55 dB till a year after surgery. Hence, it appears that an attempt at hearing preservation is worth pursuing.

INTRODUCTION Electroacoustic stimulation is an excellent option for people with residual hearing in the low frequencies, who obtain insufficient benefit with hearing aids. To be effective, the subject's residual hearing should be preserved during cochlear implant surgery. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the hearing preservation in patients that underwent implant placement and to compare the results in...

The purpose of this study was to determine the association of intraoperative auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and near-field cochlear nerve action potentials (CNAPs) with postoperative hearing preservation in acoustic tumor surgery. Thirty-three consecutive patients undergoing middle fossa surgery had intraoperative surface ABR and direct CNAP assessments. Postoperatively, hearing was assess...

BACKGROUND It is common for patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 to develop bilateral profound hearing loss hearing loss, and this is one of the main determinants of quality of life in this patient group. OBJECTIVES The aim of this systematic review was to review the current literature regarding hearing outcomes of treatments for vestibular schwannomas in neurofibromatosis type 2 including ...

CONCLUSIONS Our results indicated that electric acoustic stimulation (EAS) is beneficial for Japanese-speaking patients, including those with less residual hearing at lower frequencies. Comparable outcomes for the patients with less residual hearing indicated that current audiological criteria for EAS could be expanded. Successful hearing preservation results, together with the progressive natu...
