Graphene may have attractive properties for some biomedical applications, but its potential adverse biological effects, in particular, possible modulation when it comes in contact with blood, require further investigation. Little is known about the influence of exposure to COOH(+)-implanted graphene (COOH(+)/graphene) interacting with red blood cells and platelets. In this paper, COOH(+)/graphe...

By using polyethylenimine molecules as the linker, l-cysteine was immobilized onto graphene nanosheets, endowing the biocompatible l-cysteine-functionalized graphene film with the ability for catalytic decomposition of exogenous or endogenous donors to generate nitric oxide, and thus inhibiting the platelet activation and aggregation and reducing platelet adhesion.

Much of the excitement surrounding new carbon nanomaterials can be traced to their directional properties, which arise through precise orientation of graphene layers that are the anisotropic building blocks of all sp-hybridized carbon forms. The high conductivity, strength, and stiffness of carbon nanotubes are directly related to the parallel orientation of graphene layers relative to the tube...

Chemically modified graphene platelets, produced via graphene oxide, show great promise in a variety of applications due to their electrical, thermal, barrier and mechanical properties. Understanding the chemical structures of chemically modified graphene platelets will aid in the understanding of their physical properties and facilitate development of chemically modified graphene platelet chem...

Uniform hollow hydrogel microcapsules, composed of a graphene oxide platelet-patched shell, are fabricated in one step in a capillary-based microfluidic device. We demonstrate that patching a small amount of graphene oxide at the interfaces remarkably prevents the leakage of small molecules through the shell.

We report a process to form large-area, few-monolayer graphene oxide films and then recover the outstanding mechanical properties found in graphene to fabricate high Young's modulus ( =185 GPa), low-density nanomechanical resonators. Wafer-scale films as thin as 4 nm are sufficiently robust that they can be delaminated intact and resuspended on a bed of pillars or field of holes. From these ...

The main purpose of the present investigation is to analyze more comprehensively the size-dependent nonlinear free vibration response of multilayer functionally graded graphene platelet-reinforced composite (GPLRC) nanobeams. As a consequence, both of the hardening stiffness and softening stiffness of size effect are taken into consideration by implementation of the nonlocal str...

Germanium (Ge), as an elemental semiconductor material, has been an attractive candidate for manufacturing semiconductor microelectronic device. In the present investigation, to improve the biocompatibility of Ge-based device, graphene film is directly deposited on the Ge surface with different coverage area by controlling the growth time. Compared to bare Ge, the presence of graphene film enti...
