We describe an anterior trochanteric muscle pedicle graft based on the gluteus medius and its neurovascu!ar supply. Vascular injection and anatomical dissection were done in four cadavers to study the blood supply of this pedicle graft. The ascending branch of the superior gluteal artery was found to skirt the rim of the iliac crest to supply the gluteus medius and minimus muscles. The descendi...

BACKGROUND The gluteus medius muscle is essential for gait and hip stability. Changes that occur in the gluteus medius muscles in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are not well understood. A better understanding of DDH related changes will have positive repercussions toward hip soft tissue reconstruction. METHODS 19 adult patients with unilateral DDH scheduled for total h...

Purpose: Genu varum deformity changes the line of gravity from center of knee towards the medial side. This deviation results in changes in the upper part of the lower extremity that can affect postural control as well as the position and activity of the proximal muscles of the knee joint, like the gluteus medius muscle. Therefore this study aims to investigate the effect of genu varum disorder...

[Purpose] This study compared the activation of anterior gluteus medius fibers during general exercises and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercises. [Subjects and Methods] The study enrolled 15 healthy adults. The participants performed general hip abductor strengthening exercises and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation exercises; during both types of exercise, electromyograph...

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle activity of the gluteus medius according to treadmill inclination during gait with a vertical load on a treadmill. [Methods] Sixteen healthy subjects were recruited for this study. The subjects walked on a treadmill at inclination angles of 0, 5, and 10 degrees. [Results] Muscle activity of the gluteus medius increased at 5° compared...

OBJECTIVES To evaluate and strengthen the posterior segment of the gluteus medius. DESIGN A technical description of a novel examination and rehabilitation protocol. SETTING The gluteus medius, primarily a hip abductor, serves several important functions in the athlete. Weakness of the gluteus medius has been linked to injuries in the shoulder and iliotibial band, as well as ankle instabili...

Tears in the gluteus medius and minimus tendons, often misdiagnosed as trochanteric bursitis, have recently emerged as an important cause of recalcitrant greater trochanter pain syndrome. Advances in endoscopic surgery of the hip have created opportunities to better evaluate and treat pathology in the peritrochanteric compartment. We reviewed the literature on trochanteric pain syndrome and glu...

The objective of this experiment was to evaluate triceps brachii steaks as a substitute for gluteus medius steaks in foodservice and retail applications, including the effect of aging time and USDA quality grade on the palatability of both muscles. Top sirloin butts (n = 600) and shoulder clod arm roasts (n = 600) representing US Choice and US Select quality grades were selected at 48 h postmor...

We describe a modified lateral approach to the hip which exploits the function continuity of gluteus medius and vastus lateralis and their dense crescentic attachment to the greater trochanter. The gluteus medius is not incised or split, but is detached and mobilised with gluteus minimus as one unit. This facilitates reattachment of the glutei and helps to preserve abductor function.
