Lorenz curve and Gini index are the famous tools of income inequality. When one wants to study income inequality of a class of individuals, Partial Lorenz Curve is introduced and the corresponding measure of inequality called Partial Gini Index is defined. Partial Gini Index (PGI) is derived on Partial Lorenz Curve (PLC). Partial orderings are defined for comparison of partial Lorenz curves. Fo...
background and purpose: utilization of health care services and food influence the health status. the food and health care expenditure ratios determine the importance level of them in household's consumption expenditures. we aimed to investigate the iranian rural and urban food and health expenditure ratios inequality during 1998 to 2012. materials and methods: this is a descriptive longit...
Income and wealth differ over the life cycle. In cross-sectional distributions of income or wealth, classical inequality measures such as the Gini, could therefore find substantial inequality even if everyone have the same life-time income or wealth. We describe the AG index (Almås and Mogstad, 2011) which is a generalization of the classical Gini index with attractive properties, and we provid...
Classification has been used for predicting medical diagnosis. Classification methods can handle both numerical and categorical attributes. Gini index uses the method which biases multivalued attributes. When the number of classes are large, and the biases are increased, the Gini-based decision tree method is modified to overcome the known problems, by normalizing the Gini indexes by taking int...
In which representation is speech most sparse? Time-scale? Time-frequency? Which window generator and length should be used to create the sparsest decomposition? To answer these questions, we propose the Gini index, which is twice the area between the Lorenz curve and the 45 degree line, as a measure of signal sparsity. The Gini index, introduced in 1912, is one of the most common measures of i...
We propose an approach to explain fluctuations in time intervals of financial markets data from the view point of the Gini index. We show the explicit form of the Gini index for a Weibull distribution which is a good candidate to describe the first passage time of foreign exchange rate. The analytical expression of the Gini index gives a very close value with that of empirical data analysis.
the total irregularity of a graph g is defined as 〖irr〗_t (g)=1/2 ∑_(u,v∈v(g))▒〖|d_u-d_v |〗, where d_u denotes the degree of a vertex u∈v(g). in this paper by using the gini index, we obtain the ordering of the total irregularity index for some classes of connected graphs, with the same number of vertices.
In diagnostic decision-support systems, test selection amounts to selecting, in a sequential manner, a test that is expected to yield the largest decrease in the uncertainty about a patient’s diagnosis. For capturing this uncertainty, often an information measure is used. In this paper, we study the Shannon entropy, the Gini index, and the misclassification error for this purpose. We argue that...
Evidence for variable selection bias in classification tree algorithms based on the Gini Index is reviewed from the literature and embedded into a broader explanatory scheme: Variable selection bias in classification tree algorithms based on the Gini Index can be caused not only by the statistical effect of multiple comparisons, but also by an increasing estimation bias and variance of the spli...
