Several reports suggest garlic supplements may inhibit the metabolism of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2C9 and CYP3A4 substrates, such as warfarin and saquinavir. To characterize the effects of garlic extract on CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 enzyme activity immortalized human hepatocytes (Fa2N-4 cells) were exposed to garlic extract (0-200 μg/mL). CYP2C9 and CYP3A4 enzyme activities were evaluated in parallel with...

The opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the predominant micro-organism of chronic lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. P. aeruginosa colonizes the lungs by forming biofilm microcolonies throughout the lung. Quorum sensing (QS) renders the biofilm bacteria highly tolerant to otherwise lethal doses of antibiotics, and protects against the bactericidal activity of polymo...

The in vitro susceptibility of 20 medical isolates of Scedosporium prolificans to ajoene, allitridium and raw garlic extract derived from cloves of garlic (Allium sativum) was tested using the NCCLS reference method (with minor modifications) for broth microdilution. The results demonstrate that both garlic derivatives and raw garlic extract appear to have in vitro activity against S. prolificans.

Several studies suggest that the constituents of garlic may inhibit experimentally induced carcinogenesis. To evaluate the chemopreventive properties of garlic in humans, the effects of chronic administration of an aged garlic extract on the disposition of acetaminophen and metabolites were studied. This commonly used drug was chosen because it forms a reactive electrophilic metabolite after ox...

The present study has been carried out to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of shallot (Allium ascalonicum) and garlic (Allium satium) on the fasting insulin resistance index (FIRI) and intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT) of fructose-induced insulin resistance rats. Male albino Wistar rats were fed either normal or high-fructose diet for a period of eight weeks. Fasting blood...

In Ethiopia, honey produced by T. iridipennis in combination with garlic is widely used for traditional treatment of different infections. The objective of this study was to evaluate the synergic antibacterial effect of T. iridipennis honey and garlic mixture against standard and clinical pathogenic bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of garlic extract, tenegn honey and mixture of tenegn honey...

Garlic is known as a potent spice and a medicinal herb with broad therapeutic properties ranging from antibacterial to anticancer and anticoagulant. Our previous studies have shown some immunoregulatory effects for aged garlic extract, suggesting a key role for 14-kD glycoprotein of garlic in shifting the cytokine pattern to T helper-1. In present study, we investigated the effect of 1, 2, and ...

Hypotensive effect of garlic extract involving releasing of various prostaglandins is well documented. To further evaluate the prostaglandin-like activity of garlic extract, its effect has been demonstrated using isolated rat fundus strip and rat colon preparation. Garlic extract produced the effects on the isolated tissue similar to those of PGE. The use of this response as a bioassay for pros...

Study was designed to elucidate the mechanism of hypotensive effect of garlic extract in dogs. The antagonists for common endogenous hypotensive substances (histamine, Acetylcholine, 5 Hydroxy Tryptamine Kinins and prostaglandins) were tried to confirm or exclude the possibility that garlic extract either acts like or causes release of any one of these endogenous hypotensive agents. The results...
