We present recent results from observations of binary and multiple systems made with the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI) on ζ and σ Orionis A, ξ Tauri, HR 6493, and b Persei. We explain how the orbital modeling is performed and show that even triple systems can be constrained with the data.

Microalgal-bacterial interactions are commonly found in marine environments and are well known in diatom cultures maintained in laboratory. These interactions also exert strong effects on bacterial and algal diversity in the oceans. Small green eukaryote algae of the class Mamiellophyceae (Chlorophyta) are ubiquitous and some species, such as Ostreococcus spp., are particularly important in Med...

We have modelled the rotational modulation of X-ray emission from T Tauri stars assuming that they have isothermal, magnetically confined coronae. By extrapolating surface magnetograms we find that T Tauri coronae are compact and clumpy, such that rotational modulation arises from X-ray emitting regions being eclipsed as the star rotates. Emitting regions are close to the stellar surface and in...

Ostreococcus tauri is a marine green microalga, recognized as a model organism of the marine phytoplankton assemblage and widely distributed from coastal to oligotrophic waters. This study showed it could tolerate both arsenite and arsenate concentrations of up to 100μM, and cellular As concentration increased significantly (P<0.01) with increasing concentration of As(V) in the medium (0-50μM)....

Circadian clocks are biological timekeepers that allow living cells to time their activity in anticipation of predictable environmental changes. Detailed understanding of the circadian network of higher plants, such as Arabidopsis thaliana, is hampered by the high number of partially redundant genes. However, the picoeukaryotic alga Ostreococcus tauri, which was recently shown to possess a smal...

Large DNA viruses are ubiquitous, infecting diverse organisms ranging from algae to man, and have probably evolved from an ancient common ancestor. In aquatic environments, such algal viruses control blooms and shape the evolution of biodiversity in phytoplankton, but little is known about their biological functions. We show that Ostreococcus tauri, the smallest known marine photosynthetic euka...

I present pointed ROSAT PSPC observations of the pre-cataclysmic binary V471 Tauri. The hard X-ray emission (>0.4 keV) is not eclipsed by the K star, demonstrating conclusively that this component cannot be emitted by the white dwarf. Instead I show that its spectrum and luminosity are consistent with coronal emission from the tidally spun-up K star. The star is more active than other K stars i...

We report sub-mas observations of the Be Shell star ζ Tauri with the Grand Interféromètre à 2 Télescopes (GI2T) on November ’93 and October ’94. In ’93, the Hα line presented a V/R ratio of 0.57 with a central absorption shell component. On October ’94 the Hα line presented a reversed V/R ratio of 1.26 with a shallower absorption component. For both epochs we analysed the amplitude and phase of...
