BACKGROUND Under aerobic conditions, acetic acid is the major byproduct produced by E. coli during the fermentation. And acetic acid is detrimental to cell growth as it destroys transmembrane pH gradients. Hence, how to reduce the production of acetic acid and how to utilize it as a feedstock are of intriguing interest. In this study, we provided an evidence to produce β-caryophyllene by the en...

Maize (Zea mays) emits volatile terpenes in response to insect feeding and egg deposition to defend itself against harmful pests. However, maize cultivars differ strongly in their ability to produce the defense signal. To further understand the agroecological role and underlying genetic mechanisms for variation in terpene emission among maize cultivars, we studied the production of an important...

The fresh leaves and brine of leaves of Thymbra spicata var. spicata (KARAKIZ) were analyzed by hydrodistillation, headspace and GC/MS techniques. The main components were determined as carvacrol, p-cymene, beta-myrcene, gamma-terpinene, a-terpinene and trans-caryophyllene. The essential oil and the main compounds, carvacrol and trans-caryophyllene, have been tested against E. coli, S. epidermi...

Fresh leaves of Litsea glutinosa (Lour.) C. B. Rob. from Ha Tinh were steam distilled to produce an oil in 0.15% yield. The essential oil was analysis by a combination of capillary GC and GC/MS. Seventy eight compounds were detected in the oil, of which more than 95.18% were terpenoids. The major components were (E)-β-ocimene (13.35%), β-caryophyllene (27.20%) and bicyclogermacrene (18.16%). Ke...

Recent studies have revealed that caryophyllene and its stereoisomers not only exhibit multiple biological activities but also have desired properties as renewable candidates for ground transportation and jet fuel applications. This study presents the first significant production of caryophyllene and caryolan-1-ol by an engineered E. coli with heterologous expression of mevalonate pathway genes...

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), a member of Lamiaceae family, is an important medicinal plant that has many useful properties. Micronutrients are necessary in low dose for the growth and the development of plants. Present research was conducted to study the effects of micronutrients including manganese (Mn) and copper (Cu) on morpho-physiological traits and essential oil of lemon balm. Fie...

In this study, the variability of essential oil composition in different parts of summer savory was investigated. Extraction of essential oils from air-dried leaves and healthy seeds was done using water-distillation in Clevenger-type apparatus for 4 h. In total, 23 and 24 components were identified in the leaves and seeds of summer savory, respectively. Carvacrol (46.023%), Estragole (Methyl C...

Composition of the essential oil obtained from dried flowering aerial parts of Teucrium scordium L. (Labiatae) was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Fifty-six components were identified in the essential oil of T. scordium. The major constituents of the oil were beta-caryophyllene (22.8%), (E)-beta-farnesene (10.4%), caryophyllene oxide (8.6%), 1,8-cineole (6.1%) and beta-eudesmol (5.1%).

The efficacy of natural enemies as biological control agents against insect pests can theoretically be enhanced by artificial selection for high responsiveness to foraging cues. The recent discovery that maize roots damaged by the western corn rootworm (WCR) emit a key attractant for insect-killing nematodes has opened the way to explore whether a selection strategy can improve the control of r...
