It was found that cesium carbonate has a unique catalytic ability on the reaction of carbonyl compounds with diphenyl diselenide to give the corresponding alpha-phenylseleno carbonyl compounds in moderate to good yields. Similarly, the alpha-phenylthiolation of carbonyl compounds with diphenyl disulfide was promoted by the cesium carbonate catalyst.

The cesium carbonate-mediated reaction of 2-bromoallyl sulfones and ortho-hydroxychalcones furnished 3-arylsulfonyl-4H-chromene derivatives in 58-67% yield (18 examples). 2-Bromoallyl sulfones functioned as synthetic surrogates for allenyl sulfones in the reaction.

Highly enantioselective iridium-catalyzed hydrogenation of pyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazinium salts has been achieved, providing a direct access to chiral 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrrolo[1,2-a]pyrazine derivatives with up to 95% ee. The key feature of the reaction is the addition of cesium carbonate, which increases the conversion and prohibits the racemization pathway of products.
