Infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopic analysis of eight structural isomers of C20 carbon nanostructures, i.e. ring, tadpole, bow-tie, dumb-bell, spiro, propellane, bowl and cage, were performed at different levels of theory including semi-empirical (AM1 and PM3), Hartree-Fock (HF/6-31++G, 6-31++G**) and density functional theory (B3LYP/6-31++G, 6-31++G**). A broad range of IR spectra...

The possible formation of a “cluster molecule” (C20)2 from two single C20 fullerenes is studied by the tight-binding method. Several (C20)2 isomers in which C20 fullerenes are bound by strong covalent forces and retain their identity are found; actually, these C20 fullerenes play the role of “atoms” in the “cluster molecule”. The so-called open-[2+2] isomer has a minimum energy. Its formation p...

The optical response of the lowest energy isomers of the C20 family is calculated using time-dependent density functional theory within a real-space, real-time scheme. Significant differences are found among the spectra of the different isomers, and thus we propose optical spectroscopy as a tool for experimental investigation of the structure of these important clusters.

Studies using dietary supplementation of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acids (FA) in horses report inconsistent anti-inflammatory results but consistently report an increase in plasma arachidonic acid (C20:4), the major substrate of cyclooxygenase (COX) II inflammatory pathway. Conjugated linoleic acid has shown anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory and food animal species, but e...

High-level ab initio calculations have been carried out to reexamine relative stability of bowl, cage, and ring isomers of C(20) and C(20)(-). The total electronic energies of the three isomers show different energy orderings, strongly depending on the hybrid functionals selected. It is found that among three popular hybrid density-functional (DF) methods B3LYP, B3PW91, PBE1PBE, and a new hybri...

A new general molecular coding Prolog program is used in theoretical studies of the properties of fullerene isomers and derivatives to identify the topological equivalence classes of atoms and bonds in C20-C60 fullerenes. The symmetry perception algorithm is based on an exhaustive search of a minimal code. During this search all canonical labeled mapping trees are generated, allowing constructi...

Golden fullerenes have recently been identified by photoelectron spectra by Bulusu et al. [S. Bulusu, X. Li, L.-S. Wang, X. C. Zeng, PNAS 2006, 103, 8326-8330]. These unique triangulations of a sphere are related to fullerene duals having exactly 12 vertices of degree five, and the icosahedral hollow gold cages previously postulated are related to the Goldberg-Coxeter transforms of C20 starting...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ambient temperature and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation in diets for growing lambs on meat fatty acids composition. A slaughter study was carried out on 12 male Black Belly Barbados lambs randomly drawn from a prior growth trial (245 days). The lambs were divided into four equal groups and allotted in a 2×2 factorial design. ...
