Water-soluble Ag-Au bimetallic nanostructures were prepared via co-reduction and seed-mediated growth routes employing poly-(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) (PSSMA) as both a reductant and a stabilizer. Ag-Au alloy nanoparticles were obtained by the co-reduction of AgNO3 and HAuCl4, while Ag-Au core-shell nanostructures were prepared through seed-mediated growth using PSSMA-Au nanopartic...

Bimetallic nanoparticles with core-shell structures usually display enhanced catalytic properties due to the lattice strain created between the core and shell regions. In this study, we demonstrate the application of bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles with an Au core and a thin Pd shell as cathode catalysts in microbial fuel cells, which represent a promising technology for wastewater treatment, wh...

A new synthetic strategy has been developed for the fabrication of Au-Ag bimetallic core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) using polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) as unique nanoreactors. Bimetallic NPs composed of Au core and Ag shell were successively incorporated into PEMs by repeating anion/cation exchange/reduction cycle multiple times in a stepwise manner. The strategy described here allows for t...

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic properties of 1-3 nm-diameter bimetallic PdAu dendrimer-encapsulated catalysts are reported. Both alloy and core/shell PdAu nanoparticles were prepared. The catalytic hydrogenation of allyl alcohol was significantly enhanced in the presence of the alloy and core/shell PdAu nanoparticles as compared to mixtures of single-metal nanoparticles.

Bimetallic nanoparticles have emerged up as advanced nanomaterials due to the synergism between two metallic nanoparticles in core-shell or alloy arrangement. Moreover, bioinspired synthesis of nanoparticles is an evergreen approach of nanobiosciences. In this experiment, we have fabricated silver, gold and silver (core) gold (shell) bimetallic nanoparticles using leaf extract of Catharanthus r...

The bimetallic nanothermites, composed often of the core-shell nanoparticles or the nano-scale multilayers, provide a direct interface between two reactive metals and therefore facilitate the thermite reaction without generating excessive gases. This characteristic is extremely important for wire or material joining applications. In this study we investigated the energetic properties and diffus...

Herein we report the development of anisotropic bimetallic nanoparticles where aerosol gold nanoparticles served as the seeds for the continuous deposition of silver atoms on their surfaces. Initially, aerosol gold nanoparticles were formed by spark discharge and then injected into a silver precursor solution in an impinging device. The gold nanoparticles acted as the seed particles, and cataly...

In this study, a new and convenient one step approach is described for synthesizing shape controlled PdPt bimetallic nanoparticles. It is found that the resultant morphologies of these PdPt nanoparticles can be well controlled by simply altering the participation of different halide ions that serve as shape controlling agents in the reaction solution. The dendritic core-shell PdPt bimetallic na...

Two-dimensional assemblies of Au-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles are generated in situ on polyethyleneimmine (PEI) silane functionalized silicon and indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass surfaces. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), UV-Visible spectroscopy, and electrochemical measurements reveal the formation of core-shell structure with Au as core and Pt as shell. The core-shell structure is further sup...

Though the application of bimetallic nanoparticles is becoming increasingly important, the local atomistic structure of such alloyed particles, which is critical for tailoring their properties, is not yet very clearly understood. In this work, we present detailed study on the atomistic structure of Au-Cu nanoparticles so as to determine their most stable configurations and the conditions for ob...
