Here we present the complete genome sequence of Bacteroides fragilis isolate BOB25. It is an enterotoxigenic isolate that was obtained from a stool sample of a patient with dysbiosis.

The Bacteroides fragilis group is one of the most important pathogens in polymicrobial infections. The distribution of the different members of the B. fragilis group in clinical infections varies. Bacteroides fragilis accounts for 63 percent of all the group isolates, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron for 14 percent, Bacteroides vulgatus and Bacteroides ovatus for seven percent each, Bacteroides dis...

Oral, black-pigmented Bacteroides spp. are important pathogens in oral anaerobic infections and dental disease. We detected conjugation systems in isolates of Bacteroides denticola and Bacteroides intermedius that transferred tetracycline resistance (Tetr) and penicillin resistance to Bacteroides buccae and to Bacteroides fragilis, an intestinal Bacteroides species. A cloned Tetr gene from B. f...

Recent basic and clinical research efforts have shed more light on the taxonomy, microbiology, epidemiology, antimicrobial susceptibility and treatment of Bacteroides, Prevotella, and Porphyromonas species. Of all anaerobic bacteria, Bacteroides is the most frequently isolated pathogen from clinical specimens, including blood. Bacteroides, Prevotella and/or Porphyromonas species have been isola...

BACKGROUND The rationale and lessons learned through the evolution of the National Survey for the Susceptibility of Bacteroides fragilis Group from its initiation in 1981 through 2007 are reviewed here. The survey was conceived in 1980 to track emerging antimicrobial resistance in Bacteroides species. METHODS Data from the last 11 years of the survey (1997-2007), including 6574 isolates from ...

A unique shuttle plasmid, pDP1, has been constructed to mediate gene transfer between Escherichia coli and the Gram-negative anaerobe Bacteroides fragilis. pDP1 contains the pBR322 replicon and the Bacteroides clindamycin resistance plasmid pCP1 linked to the transfer origin of the broad host range plasmid RK2. pDP1 can be transferred from E. coli to B. fragilis by the RK2 conjugation system ev...

Bacteroides fragilis group and Bacteroides melaninogenicus group fluorescent-antibody kits were evaluated with 188 clinical specimens and 116 fresh aerobic and anaerobic bacterial isolates. Fluorescent-antibody and culture results corresponded in 88% of clinical specimens of the B. fragilis group and 94% of clinical specimens of the B. melaninogenicus group. There was greater than or equal to 9...

We investigated associations of species of the Bacteroides fragilis group with Japanese cedar pollinosis (JCPsis). Cell numbers of Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides intestinalis were significantly higher in JCPsis subjects than in non-JCPsis subjects before the pollen season. They correlated positively with both symptom scores and JCPsis-specific immunoglobulin E levels.

Antiserum prepared in rabbits against Bacteroides fragilis showed numerous bands when reacted with B. fragilis antigen in Ouchterlony plates. This antiserum also reacted with Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron and showed one band of apparent identity with B. fragilis. The band of identity common for both organisms was lost if the antigen was heated at 80 degrees C for 30 min. Antisera prepared agains...

A cloned xylanase gene from the ruminal bacterium Bacteroides ruminicola 23 was transferred by conjugation into the colonic species Bacteroides fragilis and Bacteroides uniformis by using the Escherichia coli-Bacteroides shuttle vector pVAL-1. The cloned gene was expressed in both species, and xylanase specific activity in crude extracts was found to be at least 1400-fold greater than that foun...
