Brevibacillus brevis strain FJAT-0809-GLX had significant inhibition on many plant and animal pathogens. The draft genome sequence of B. brevis FJAT-0809-GLX is 6 Mb in size and consists of 5,677 genes (protein-coding sequences [CDS]), with an average length of 933 bp and a G+C content of 47.30%. Compared with the published B. brevis strain NBRC 100599, 618 specific genes were identified in the...

The middle wall protein gene of Bacillus brevis 47 has two potential translation initiation sites located tandemly in the same reading frame. We demonstrate here that both sites are utilized to start translation in B. brevis 47. Translation from the first site (located upstream) gives rise to a precursor of the middle wall protein with an extension peptide of 31 amino acids preceding the signal...

Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus brevis 47-5, carrying the Bacillus stearothermophilus alpha-amylase gene on pUB110 (pBAM101), synthesized the same alpha-amylase as the donor strain as determined by the enzyme's thermal stability and NH2-terminal amino acid sequence. Regardless of the host, the 34-amino acid signal peptide of the enzyme was processed at exactly the same site between two alanine r...

Bacillus brevis 47 secreted up to 1 mg of protein per ml in a chemically defined medium, depending on phosphate concentration. The composition of exoproteins was altered quantitatively by the concentration of external phosphate. Morphologically, B. brevis 47 showed a distinct three-layered cell wall structure and shed the outer two layers during growth.

The present study aims to evaluate and validate a statistical model for maximizing biosurfactant productivity by Bacillus brevis using response surface methodology. In this respect, twenty bacterial isolates were screened for biosurfactant production using hemolytic activity, oil spreading technique, and emulsification index (E24). The most potent biosurfactant-producing bacterium (B. brevis) w...

We succeeded in hyperproduction of Bacillus thuringiensis phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C (PIPLC), using a Bacillus brevis 47 expression system. The recombinant B. thuringiensis PIPLC was expressed under the control of the middle wall protein gene promoter in B. brevis expression vector pNU211. A large amount of recombinant PIPLC (0.4 g per liter culture) was secreted into the med...

BACKGROUND Mannanase is an enzyme that can catalyze random hydrolysis of beta-1,4-mannosidic linkages in the main chain of mannans, glucomannans and galactomannans which are the key polymers in hemicellulose. It has been used in a number of different industrial applications including food, feed, pharmaceutical, pulp/paper industries, and second generation biofuel. To optimize the expression sys...

We examined the genetic structure of populations of an ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus brevis (Eichhoff) (Curculionidae: Scolytinae), to understand its colonization dynamics. We collected specimens from 20 sites in Japan and studied the genetic structure of these populations using portions of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI). A phylogenetic analysis showed three distinct lineages ...
