We report a case of renal autotransplantation performed successfully for an iatrogenic ureteric injury with loss of 9 cm of ureteric length. The surgical options available for management of ureteric injuries are discussed, varying from a simple re-anastomosis to the more complex renal autotransplantation.
OBJECTIVE Thyroidectomy is the most common cause of hypocalcemia. Preservation of parathyroid glands in situ is essential in preventing this complication. The aims of our study were to review patients who underwent parathyroid gland autotransplantation during thyroidectomy, and to compare hypocalcemia rates in patients with and without autotransplantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Parathyroid gla...
Autogenous tooth transplantation, or autotransplantation, is a promising procedure for recovering the occlusal function of lost teeth. Once thought to be experimental, autotransplantation has achieved high success rates and is an excellent option for tooth replacement. Autotransplantation is now a common procedure in dentistry for replacing a missing tooth especially in children and adolescents...
Mononuclear phagocytic function was studied using the Fc-receptor test in 24 patients who underwent splenectomy, ten of whom underwent splenic autotransplantation. All patients undergoing autotransplantation had mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) activity at the transplantation sites. In eight of the 14 patients who did not undergo autotransplantation there was also scintigraphic MPS activity i...
Renal autotransplantation is a safe and effective procedure to reconstruct the urinary tract. The current indications for autotransplantation include renal vascular disease, severe ureteral damage, tumours of the kidney and ureter, complex nephrolithiasis and retroperitoneal fibrosis. We report a rare case where we had to perform renal autotransplantation along with hybrid surgery for aortic an...
HYPOTHESIS Splenic autotransplantation plays a role in preserving immune function of the spleen in patients with portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis. DESIGN Prospective randomized study. SETTING University hospital. PATIENTS Twenty patients (19 men and 1 woman; aged 33-80 years) suffering from portal hypertension and liver cirrhosis were randomly allocated into 2 groups. BACKGROUND The risk of recurrent oncological disease due to the reintroduction of cancer cells via autotransplantation of cryopreserved ovarian tissue is unknown. METHODS A systematic review of literature derived from MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library was conducted. Studies on follow-up after autotransplantation; detection of cancer cells in ovarian tissue from oncological patients by hi...
AIM The aims of this report are to present three cases of autotransplantation along with a review of the indications, selection criteria for patient donor and recipient sites, and the major steps in the surgical procedure. BACKGROUND Autogenous tooth transplantation, or autotransplantation, is the surgical movement of a tooth from one location in the mouth to another in the same individual. I...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Clinical trials have shown that high dose chemotherapy (HDT) with peripheral stem cell autotransplantation is presently the best treatment for patients with symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM). In the context of an outcomes research project, we analyzed the feasibility of this strategy in clinical practice in a large cohort of consecutive, unselected patients with newly ...
In this article, we report on 904 patients undergoing transplantation for follicular lymphoma. A total of 176 (19%) received allogeneic, 131 (14%) received purged autologous, and 597 (67%) received unpurged autologous transplants. Five-year treatment-related mortality (TRM) rates were 30%, 14%, and 8% and 5-year recurrence rates were 21%, 43%, and 58% after allotransplantation, purged autotrans...
