al3+-potentiometric sensor, based on (2z) -methyl 2- ((z) (p-tolylimino)-3-ethyl -4-oxothiazolidin -5- ylidene) acetate (mteoy) as a neutral ionophore, was successfully developed for the detectionof al3+ in aqueous solutions. the electrode responds to al3+ ion with a sensitivity of 19.8 ± 0.1 mv/decade over the range 1.0 x 10-8- 1.0 x 10-1 mol lt' and in a ph range of 3.0-9.0. the electrodeshow...

Aluminium is known to be toxic to cells from bone, brain and bone marrow but the molecular target(s) affected by Al3+ are not known. We show here that Al3+ disrupts the oscillatory free Ca2+ responses of hepatocytes exposed to the Ca2(+)-mobilizing agonist phenylephrine. Al3+ initially increases the frequency of the oscillations and later induces broad Ca2+ spikes lasting several minutes. These...

The increasing number of roles discovered for Al3+ in physiological processes demands an understanding of how Al3+ interacts with compounds in biological systems. Al3+ is expected to complex with oxygen donor ligands, especially phosphates, and it does so in soils, in the gastrointestinal tract, and in cells. The stability of Al3+ complexes has generally been misjudged because of lack of recogn...

Geminiviruses replicate their small, single-stranded DNA genomes through double-stranded DNA intermediates in plant nuclei using host replication machinery. Like most dicot-infecting geminiviruses, tomato golden mosaic virus encodes a protein, AL3 or C3, that greatly enhances viral DNA accumulation through an unknown mechanism. Earlier studies showed that AL3 forms oligomers and interacts with ...

The effects of the trivalent cation aluminum (Al3+) on voltage activated calcium channel currents were examined. Al3+ blocks sustained and transient components of voltage activated calcium channel currents of cultured rat dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells. Currents were elicited by voltage jumps from -80 to 0 mV. The channel block was use dependent. Steady state blockade occurred after 1 to 5 mi...

Literature regarding the biochemistry of aluminum and eight similar ions is reviewed. Close and hitherto unknown similarities were found. A hypothetical model is presented for the metabolism, based on documented direct observations of Al3+ and analogies from other ions. Main characteristics are low intestinal absorption, rapid urinary excretion, and slow tissue uptake, mostly in skeleton and re...

To study the mechanism of aluminium toxicity in plant cells, the effects of aluminium on the electrogenesis of plasma membrane were investigated. We analyzed Al3+ induced membrane potential (Em) changes and potential changes during generation of the action potential (AP) in the internodal cells of Nitellopsis obtusa. Al3+ modified Em decrease significantly. Al3+ didn’t attenuate the amplitude o...

We investigate theoretically the site occupancy of Al3+ in the fast-ion-conducting cubic-garnet Li7-3x Al3+x La3Zr2O12 (Ia-3d) using density functional theory. By comparing calculated and measured 27Al NMR chemical shifts an analysis shows that Al3+ prefers the tetrahedrally coordinated 24d site and a distorted 4-fold coordinated 96h site. The site energies for Al3+ ions, which are slightly dis...

A simple Schiff-base receptor 2 was prepared. It exhibits an “off-on-type” mode with high sensitivity in the presence of Al3+. The receptor 2 exhibited a high association constant with submicromolar detection for Al3+ in EtOH–H2O (95:5 v/v) solution. The addition of EDTA quenches the fluorescence of the receptor 2·Al3+ complex offering receptor 2 as a reversible chemosensor.
