Erbium-doped solgel films are applied to the surface of silica microspheres to create low-threshold microactivity lasers. This gain functionalization can be applied by use of a number of different dopants, thereby extending the wavelength range of this class of device. Also, by varying the doping concentration and thickness of the applied solgel layer, one can vary the laser dynamics so that bo...

PURPOSE Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a nosocomial infection resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are pathogens associated with VAP. Silver (Ag) coating of endotracheal tubes (ETTs) reduces bacterial colonization, however titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) coating has not been studied. METHODS Five typ...

Functionalized silica nanotube (FSNT) possessing the phenanthroline moiety as a fluorescent receptor was fabricated by solgel reaction, and the binding ability of FSNT with metal ions was evaluated by fluorophotometry.

A novel solution to problematic ghost images is implemented by using tilted lens elements with polynomial surfaces. Tilting the lens surfaces sends reflections out of the imaging path. The nonrotationally symmetric polynomial surfaces correct aberrations caused by tilts. The complex lens surfaces are fabricated by using gray-scale lithographic patterning of hybrid solgel glass.

We present a procedure for the optical characterization of thin-film stacks from spectrophotometric data. The procedure overcomes the intrinsic limitations arising in the numerical determination of many parameters from reflectance or transmittance spectra measurements. The key point is to use all the information available from the manufacturing process in a single global optimization process. T...

A Yb-doped silica microcavity laser on a silicon chip is fabricated from a solgel thin film. The high-Q micro-toroid cavity, which has a finesse of 10,000, is evanescently coupled to an optical fiber taper. We report a threshold of 1.8 microW absorbed power that is, to the best of our knowledge, the lowest published threshold to date for any Yb-doped laser. The effect of Yb(3+) concentration on...

We present time-resolved photoluminescence studies in conjunction with device characterization of a variety of heterojunctions with poly-(3-hexylthiophene), or P3HT, as a means to understand how exciton dynamics affect device performance. We find that blends of P3HT with the electron-transporting polymer CN-ether-PPV and with the fullerene derivative PCBM result in ~4-fold and ~15-fold improvem...
