According to Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology [48], the genus Aeromonas includes the following species: Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas bestiarum, Aeromonas salmonicida, Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas media, Aeromonas eucrenophila, Aeromonas sobria, Aeromonas veronii (biovars sobria and veronii), Aeromonas jandaei, Aeromonas schubertii, Aeromonas trota, Aeromonas allosaccharophila, Aerom...

The pigmentation of many Aeromonas species has been thought to be due to the production of a L-DOPA (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) based melanin. However, in this study we found that although L-DOPA synthesis occurs in the high-melanin-yielding Aeromonas media strain WS, it plays a minor, if any, role in pigmentation. Instead, the pigmentation of A. media strain WS is due to the production of p...

We studied nine solid and two liquid media for their suitability to select Aeromonas and Plesiomonas spp. from human stools, using artificially contaminated samples as well as 254 samples from outpatients with and without diarrhea. Media with optimal sensitivity and specificity for Aeromonas spp. were alkaline peptone-water, Trypticase soy broth with ampicillin, inositol-brilliant green-bile sa...

Members of the genus Aeromonas are important enteropathogens. Commercial identification systems are often unable to correctly identify Aeromonas strains and misidentification as Vibrio spp. is common. A digoxigenin-DNA probe based on a 237 bp of the glycerophospholipid-cholesterol acyltransferase gene has been tested in a colony hybridization assay. The probe hybridized with all Aeromonas speci...

Aeromonas spp is recognized as pathogenic to humans after consumption of contaminated water and food. In the present investigation, 2,323 rectal swab samples from newborns hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro were evaluated with a view to isolating Aeromonas. The samples were collected and sent to the national reference laboratory for cholera and other bacterial intestinal infections, at the Oswaldo ...

Thirty water samples were collected, at two week intervals, from the estuary of the River Cocó. The aim was to characterize the presence, distribution and types of Aeromonas spp, in the estuary of the River Cocó, Ceara, Brazil (03°46'28.83''S e 38°26'36.52''S). Aeromonas were identified in 19 (63%) samples analyzed by plating and CFU counts. Presence/absence tests were positive for 11 (37%) of ...

We sequenced the genome of the high-melanin-yielding Aeromonas media strain WS and then analyzed genes potentially involved in melanin formation. The 4.2-Mb draft genome carries multiple genes responsible for pyomelanin synthesis and other candidate genes identified in our separate study, which have no homolog in other strains of Aeromonas species.

Amoeba-resistant Aeromonas veronii ARB3 and Aeromonas media ARB13 and ARB20, which may be important intracellular pathogens of eukaryotic hosts, were isolated from pond and river waters. The draft genome sequences indicate that the strains harbor multiple protein secretion systems and toxins that induce disruption of the actin cytoskeleton.

Conventional identification of Aeromonas species based on biochemical methods is challenged by the heterogeneous nature of the species. Here, we present a new multiplex PCR method directed toward the gyrB and rpoB genes that identifies four Aeromonas species, A. hydrophila, A. media, A. veronii, and A. caviae, and we describe the application of this method on a Danish strain collection.

Between April and October 2002, thirty fortnightly collections of oysters (Crassostrea rhizophorea) from a natural oyster bed at the Cocó River estuary in the Sabiaguaba region (Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil) were carried out, aiming to isolate Aeromonas spp. strains. Oyster samples were submitted to the direct plating (DP) and the presence/absence (P/A) methods. Aeromonas were identified in 15 (50%...
