Travelling is an activity closely associated with Carolus Linnaeus (1707-1778) and his circle of students. This article discusses the transformative role of studying nature outdoors (turning novices into naturalists) in eighteenth-century Sweden, using the little-known journeys of Carl Bäck (1760-1776), Sven Anders Hedin (1750-1821) and Johan Lindwall (1743-1796) as examples. On these journeys,...
Four species of copepod, Caligus bonito Wilson, 1905 (Caligidae), Clavellisa scombri Kurz, 1877 (Lernaeopodidae), Pandarus bicolor Leach, 1816 (Pandaridae) and Anchistrotos laqueus Leigh-Sharpe, 1935 (Bomolochidae) were reported from Coryphaena hippurus Linnaeus, 1758, Scomber scombrus Linnaeus, 1758, Mustelus mustelus Linnaeus, 1758 and Serranus hepatus Linnaeus, 1758. These parasites were rec...
Fold recognition techniques assist the exploration of protein structures, and web-based servers are part of the standard set of tools used in the analysis of biochemical problems. Despite their success, current methods are only able to predict the correct fold in a relatively small number of cases. We propose an approach that improves the selection of correct folds from among the results of two...
A nomenclatural review of Sarcoramphus vultures resulted in the following: The genus Sarcoramphus was described by Duméril in 1805 rather than 1806. Vultur papa Linnaeus, 1758, is the type of Sarcoramphus by subsequent monotypy (Froriep in Duméril 1806), not by Vigors's (1825) designation. The type of the genus Gypagus Vieillot, 1816, is, by monotypy, Vultur gryphus Linnaeus, 1758, not Vultur p...
The Palaearctic Hylaea fasciaria (Linnaeus, 1758) species group is revised (Lepidoptera: Geometridae, Ennominae). Four taxa are considered valid at species level: H. fasciaria (Linnaeus, 1758), H. pinicolaria (Bellier, 1861), H. compararia (Staudinger, 1894) and one new species, H. mediterranea, from Italy: Sicily, Calabria and Molise. The following taxonomic changes are proposed: Ellopia cedri...

The usage of the name Rana ocellata Linnaeus, 1758, is plagued by misidentifications and misinterpretations. After an exhaustive bibliographic review, we conclude that the Linnaeus 1758 name refers to Osteopilus brunneus (Gosse, 1851) from Jamaica, while the taxon currently known as Leptodactylus ocellatus corresponds to Rana latrans Steffen, 1815. Herein, we designate and provide descriptions ...
Near the end of 2001 February, the black-hole candidate (BHC) GRS 1758–258 made an abrupt transition from a standard hard (low) state to a soft state. Unlike Cyg X–1 and other BHCs, whose luminosity increases during this transition, GRS 1758–258 was dimmer after the transition. We present observations with the Proportional Counter Array on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer and interpret the pheno...
We present revised infrared (2.2μm) astrometry of the field containing the Galactic microquasar GRS 1758−258, using observations at the Keck I 10-m telescope. We find three candidates for the microquasar within a 3σ error circle, but none within 2σ. We show that if the 18.4 day X-ray period of GRS 1758−258 is due to a binary orbit, then only one of the three candidates, an early K-type giant, i...
