Cryptophane-111 is one of the best candidates for (129)Xe MRI-based applications. Herein, we report the first metal-free and water-soluble cryptophane-111 core which involves an efficient and unusual post-synthetic sulfonation procedure.

Neuroendocrine tumours are characterised by the expression of high affinity binding sites for somatostatin. The detection of bronchial carcinoid tumours through scintigraphic imaging is described in two patients using the novel radiolabelled somatostatin analogue indium-111 pentetreotide.

Capping of cyclotriphenolene (3a) by the more available cyclotriguaiacylene (3c) or trisbromocyclotriphenolene (3b) gives the first rim-functionalized cryptophane-111 derivatives. Crystal structures of the xenon complexes reveal high cavity packing coefficients and unprecedentedly short Xe···C contacts.

High bandwidth, uncooled, Indium Arsenide (InAs) electron avalanche photodiodes (e-APDs) with unique and highly desirable characteristics are reported.
